Great Perth Bike Ride

Sounds like a much smaller version of the Round the Bay in a Day event, only

Thought other Perth people might be interested. Entires close on Tuesday
next week so get in quick if you are interested.
I will give it a go, but imagine lots of casual cyclists, so no records will
be broken. Could be fun though, and we get to ride on the freeway!

Don't think you'll get to ride on the Freeway - most likely it will be
the adjacent bikepath.

Why would I pay $25 to do ride that I must have done 100 times
before?

I'm suprised with the price to. Since it's the inaugural event I would
of expected perhaps a lower price in an attempt to attract as many
riders as possible.

I agree with you. I wouldn't pay, I enjoy the self-sufficent approach to
cycling, but then again the thrill of being part of a large group is
what rides like this offer.

I suppose if you look at the costs involved in setting up an event then
you can understand the price. There's printing entry form/flyers,
distribution and postage costs, phone calls, public liability insurance,
route signposting, food/drinks for participants, police (sometimes they
charge), fuel for support vehicles, phone calls, staff (not everything
can be done by volunteers), entertainment, masseurs, t-shirts, radio
comunications, etc.

I've organised a few rides like this in my time. They are a major
undertaking. I spent about three months full time on them. I don't think
the returns are that great for the organisers, unless they get some sort
of government/corporate support. Basically the entry fee goes towards
the costs of organising the event.

Thanks to the support of 'Homebase Expo Subiaco' & 'Bioplex Nutrition' we
have a few starters on the line next Sunday.
Just get your company to pay the entry like most do with the 'City to Surf',
not sure about the closing date though but I can't see them refusing $25 in
cash a few days before the start , its not like it is the Argus in Cape
Town with 30,000 starters!

They should just make it $5 more to enter on the day, most people are
just too lazy to put the entry on the envelope, or are waiting to see
what the weather is like on the day. It's amazing how well a little
financial encouragement works.

I'm a bit put off by the price too. It's a bit like the City to Surf event,
a lot of money for a run.
However, I've organised events myself and it costs about three times the
entry fee (per person) to actually run the event. The rest is made up from
sponsors.
I do also run a free (entry) event but there is no insurance cover and no
prizes.

I guess it could have been worse.. maybe next year they'll lead off with

They are closing a lane of the freeway from Canning Highway to the Narrows. It
is worth doing the ride just for that alone. The Police have said that it
depends on how well riders behave themselves as to whether this part will be
allowed next year.

It is a mass participation ride that is attempting to raise funds for a
worthwhile cause. The sponsors will help with the costs, the participants have
to pay a small amount for the thrill of being amoungst 3,000 riders and know
that some of their money will go to something worthwhile.

Outreach Program on the web site.

Yes, must admit I thought $25 was a bit steep, but I reasoned that it was a
rare opportunity to do something a bit different and it is for a good cause.

$25 isn't much these days.
I went to the pictures on Saturday $17.50 just to get in.

I did. They were saying 1800 riders. The whole route was on the road, including
a lane of the freeway. All intersections were controlled, with right of way
given to cyclists. The easiest circuit I've ever done, no competing with cars at
all ! Really well organised and great number of volunteers. Hate to think what
they would have paid for all of the witches hats, signs and official traffic
contractors.

Would love to see lots more cyclists next year.

Found my tyres going red from riding a bit in the emergency lane 🙂
Apparently there were a few close calls with cars after getting some feedback from someone listening to nova 93.7
Didn't see any accidents at all and did hear that someone managed to get a puncture.

Not many stayed behind for any of the presentations at all. Peter Natrass perth mayor was commenting that the supreme court gardens was too small & next year would have to be on langley park.
Would be great next year to see more riders. I know someone that did wanna go & missed out on the registration date, so I'll drag him along next year and maybe for a team.

At 53 kms and technically not a race, it is well suited to your average cyclist (which i am).

To those complaining about the entrance price - with about 1700 riders at $25 a head, the total revenue is only $42500. That's not much for any charity, considering the amount of work it would have taken to organise such an event. Think of the poor sods who had to fence off the areas and put out the hundreds of witches hats out at 6am.

Top event i thought. Congrats to the organisers 🙂 😄

I went too - fantastic little ride and really enjoyed myself. I was intending to toddle round but a bunch of guys went past us like a steam train at the old swan brewery and after that it was all on. To me it was just like a Narrows ride but with the added bonus of the freeway. Pity the wind wasn't completely behind us down that stretch but it was still most enjoyable
