latest on the nudity/arrest thing:
Although yesterday the police were completely fine with full nudity,
today
they found out Brighton was not and have now asked for genital discretion
for manchester.
they won't assign police specificaly to us and don't intend to make any
arrests but wanted to warn us they COULD if they recieved complaints...

they are backing the protest completely otherwise and see no problem with
it + are happy to negotiate full nudity if we wish to make the ride a
regular thing in years to come.

I rode last year in Bath. I had hoped to ride again this year, but it
didn't seem to be happening anywhere that would be practical for me to
ride to so I stayed at home and cleaned my bike instead.

/was/ a ride in Bath today. Now I'm disappointed - I didn't bother
going because I hadn't been able to find any information beforehand to
suggest that it was happening.

Thanks for the responses, As I understand it, the idea is to draw
attention to environmental issues, I don't know why you need to be naked
to do this though. It is my concern that such actions marginalise
environmental issues to "cranks who ride bicycles naked" for example,
This is by no means a criticism, just an observation. I firmly believe
in the right to express yourself as you wish within broad parameters.

The Critical Mass rides do have an impact but, IMHO, they irate more than
they persuade, and, since this format has been used before, anyone wanting
to raise an issue have to come up with a new formula.

With the World Naked Bike Ride, the demonstration doesn't need many people
to get the point across. Nudity is the hook of the protest, not the ride
itself. Banner waving or just a simple ride would not grab the media
interest that is desired. Since this doesn't cause too much disruption,
fewer on-lookers are alienated.

As the riders have not set out to cause offence, there is nothing the Police
will do about them being nude.I doubt if there is one cause that the riders
are protesting over, be it global warming, inequity of trade or the lack of
respect for cyclists by drivers. With the body paint, silly wigs and odd
collection of bikes, the whole thing is just goddam funny.

As regards the message getting marginalised, I think it is only the red top
tabloids, who can't dis-associate nudity from titilation, that would boil it
down to "cranks who ride bicycles naked". But that doesn't match, because
nobody reads those things for their informed opinion.
