GPS Utility can be used to manage lists of waypoints, routes
and tracks and to transfer this information to and from various
GPS receivers. For a full list of functions currently supported
read the "Contents" information which is accessed via the "Help" menu.
GPS Utility has been tested on Win95/98, WinNT, WinME, WinXP and Win2000
systems.
GPS Utility has not been tested on all Garmin, Magellan, MLR, Furuno,
Simrad or Raytheon GPS receivers - if you find one on which it does
not work, please let the author know.

LIMITATIONS and KNOWN PROBLEMS

CONTENTS or search on LIMITATIONS.
INSTALLATION
The 4.1x editions of GPS Utility are packaged as a self installing
EXE file.
Beta test upgrades are packaged in ZIP files for manual installation.
After running the self installing EXE, you may wish to delete the
source file as it is no longer needed.
You may also wish to create an association between a filetype and
GPS Utility, see the instructions below. Creating an assocation
between the filetype 'GPS' will allow you to start GPS Utility
automatically by double clicking on files of that type. (see below
for more instructions).
The following files should have been installed in the GPSU Utility program
directory.
GPSU410.EXE (or GPSU411, GPSU412 etc.) - The main application

The GPSU41.RTF file may be opened in a word processor and printed.
It contains the Help panel information (but in an unstructured order).
CREATING FILE ASSOCIATIONS
If you wish to create an association for any file type, see the WINDOWS HELP
system for 'associating file types with programs'. This allows you to start
GPS Utility automatically by double clicking on a datafile or by dropping a
file onto the GPS Utility icon.
UNINSTALLING GPS UTILITY
If you used the self extracting EXE file to install then you can use the
uninstall program which is in the Start Menu/Programs/GPS Utility directory.
To uninstall manually:
Just delete the directory in which you stored GPS Utility and the GPSU.INI
file which you will find in your C:\WINDOWS directory. GPS Utility does
not have any DLLs or go messing around in the Registry. It is a self
contained EXE file with a couple of data files. Don't forget to delete the
GPSU.INI file which is probably in your C:/WINDOWS directory.
USAGE NOTES:
Before you use GPS Utility in earnest you may wish to change some of the
initial default settings to suit your preference and expected mode of
working. The main preferences are in the following menus:
Options|General - general preferences
- loadable grids (chose any special grids you will use)
- number of waypoints/route (licenced eTrex/eMap users)
GPS|Setup - Interface mode
- Com Port number
Options|DataSet - Time Zone / Date format
- Decimal separator, Degree symbol etc.
- Units etc.
In addition you may wish to set the Coordinate Format and select your
favourite datums by going to File|New and then the View menu.
Map drawing preferences are in Options|Map Settings.
Other preferences can be found in Options|Field Properties and in
Options|Map Parameters, but you should not need to vary these defaults
except in special circumstances.
The initial default settings are:
Datum - WGS84
Time Zone - 0
Communication Port - COM1
Degree Symbol - ASCII character 176
Printer Font - Courier (best to use single spaced fonts)
Symbol Set - SymSet1 (for GPS12,48 etc.)
See the Help information for other possible settings
In particular you should set the Communication Port (in GPS|Setup) and
the Time Zone (in Options|DataSet) to suit your particular situation.
The time zone setting for EST is -5 and for Australia is +10.
You may wish to use the '^' for the degree symbol as this is easier to
type on most keyboards and it is more visually distinct from the
the " (seconds) symbol.
You may also like to set the Printer Font to another font (for example,
'Courier New'😉. It is best to use a monospaced font.
RARE INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
1. In some WinXP installations the "winhlp32 file" is not expanded.
If not available this causes a problem with the GPSU help system.
This is a Microsoft problem. The fix is to manually expand the file
from "C:\Windows\driver cache\I386" into the Windows root directory.
GETTING STARTED
Click on 'LEARNING ABOUT' in the 'HELP' menu. This will take you through
a mini tutorial. It uses the SAMPLE.TXT file which you can also examine
using any standard text editor.
For Map Digitizing you can try using the LOBOS.TXT and LOBOS.BMP files.
Follow the instructions in 'LEARNING MAP REGISTRATION' which are accessed
via the Help Contents menu.
You may also like to take a look at the 'THINGS TO DO' with GPS Utility
(see the 'CONTENTS' page).
