GPS waypoint enterinig software?

I'd recommend GPS Utility. http://www.gpsu.co.uk/

It has lots of utilities for data format conversion both on import and
export of data. It'll allow you to enter and edit waypoints and much
more. I use it to archive all my tracklogs and waypoints.

For example it allows you to select waypoints from your archive by
plotting them on a grid and then selecting those you want using a
rectangle. When I'm going off to the Alps I simply drag a rectangle
around the Alpine region of my waypoints and upload them to the GPS,
when I get back I download any extra Alpine waypoints collected during
the trip and then reselect and upload my UK waypoints to the GPS.

Hi Simon,

I just took a look at your site and saw you GPS Files page. I have a
Magellan Meridian Gold which I bought a couple years ago for working
out details of walks here in Portugal. See
http://www.azenhadoramalho.com/walking.htm Finally I am beginning to
use it for those walks and I am wondering how to connect it to my PC.
To my dismay I found out after buying the Meridian Gold that you had to
buy an expensive map CD that was of no use for me, just to get the
interface software.

Does anybody know if this is still the case or is there third party
interface software available?

Hi Chris,
I only have experience of Garmin GPS receivers, but the GPS Utility
software (mentioned by Mike Clark in this thread - I'd second his
recommendation) works with Magellan Meridians according to its website
(http://www.gpsu.co.uk/ ). It is free to download and use, and cheap
to register it for more advanced usage. Did your Magellan come with a
cable for connecting it to your PC?

Google maps uses Gpsbabel to extract data from various receivers,
including Magellans, but it only does the transfer, it doesn't
allow for display or editing (though, of course, Google Maps
itself can do some of that).

It used to be the case that most utility software supported only
Garmins and Magellan support was poor. This has improved somewhat,
but if you do find that your chosen software has no Magellan
support it may be possible to use gpsbabel for the conversion.

That GPS Utility program sounds like just what I need. Thanks. Yes
I do have a cable for the Magellan Meridian but I need a USB to serial
converter. The Pfranc.com converter looks good but I haven't seen any
others yet.

That easy GPS looks interesting too, thanks. It now seems possible to
provide walkers who stay at our place with a GPS waypoint loading
facility.

I have had a GPS connection cable from them in the past. They'd get my
recommendation too - cheap and friendly service, if they still do it
(http://www.pfranc.co.uk/).
