GPS to MemoryMap

There have been some interface problems with Garmin and Memory Map. If you
download the latest updates from MM you might find the position improves -
mine did, and I was getting strange error reports.

Tried the various suggestions guys. No luck. Beginning to suspect my
ageing GPS just does not cut the mustard. Will connect up a more modern
Garmin later.

Assuming that the cable is good your GPS should work with any software
used to talking with Garmins. If you are transferring waypoints / tracks
you would normally set the GPS to GRMN/GRMN on the Interface screen from
the Setup Menu.

If you are wanting to display the current position on mapping software
you would normally have the GPS set to NMEA/NMEA.

Those settings are the norm and not specific for Memory Map but if you
have not tried them give them a whirl.

The other thing to check is that some other software is not hogging the
serial port (commonly the culprit used to be Palm's Hotsync), that the
port set in Memory Map is the correct one and that the laptop does not
have the port disabled!

Failing that try a different cable if you can borrow one...

Garmin does not support D800: USE N'. What does it mean? What should I
do?

D800 is the Garmin PVT (position velocity time) request code. It is a
way software can query more recent Garmin receivers for their position
when they are set in GRMN/GRMN mode. It seems your II+ does not have
this capability.

I therefore suspect that Memory Map is trying to be clever and use this
method to get the position from the receiver. Try fooling Memory Map by
configuring the GPS as a 'generic NMEA' or similar. You could even
select Magellan as they use NMEA.

Aside: I think some of the units of a similar age did have this
capability. What software version is yours? The version is displayed on
the screen that shows when you turn it on. If it is not 3.03 or 2.07 you
may be able to update it with a download from Garmin:

Hi Dominic
my software is 2.04 so I will update it at the weekend. I am having some
success. Last night I successfully downloaded a route from my PC/Memory
Map to my Garmin. I suspect my problem with not having my position
displayed is down to not following the hopelessly obscure manual/scree
instructions properly.
