Got a grant!

Congrats! Glad to see my REI $$$ going to a good cause. They really
are a great company who give back quite a lot to the communities they
are in. Not only dollars but people and marketing resources as well.
There may be cheaper gear outlets, but my money goes to those who care.

The flagship store here in Denver is magnificent. It's in an old
trolley building with over 100,000 sq. ft. They even have a climbing
wall and mountain bike test track.

Awesome. Be careful using those tools to build stunts or features on
the trail. You know how much trouble we're getting into down here by
simply trying to cut in new, interesting trails...

miles, 2 mtn ranges, etc.? Hoppin and poppin with the kid?

Well, some really committed folks have been building longer, tougher
trails up there, and the Forest Circus, who's always been really
supportive, is all of a sudden getting their panties in a twist because
we're building log features and things on the trails, and since the
northshore and SC debacles, they're all paranoid about it, threatening
to fine our Swimba president, even though he had all the necessary
permits to build the cooler trails!

They've even put signs up at trail junctions that say, (and I kid you
not), "Please Turn Around." They can't actually ban us yet, because
the trails are primarily on private land up there, but they're having
conniptions about the new trails for some reason.

You'll have a great ride. I rode the Eastside trail on November 20,
2004 with a small group of friends and had a great time in spite of the
cold. (There was no snow on the trail and the ground was dry.

The most amazing part of the ride is the gigantic ponderosa pine trees
near the beginning. I think that these trees were preserved as part of
Bogus Basin State Park -- but I've never heard of the State Park other
than to see this on old maps of the area. Perhaps it's time for a
revival of the concept.

One of these summers I'll get back to Idaho for some riding -- on days
like yesterday, 117 degrees in my back yard, and today, 115 degrees,
and tomorrow, who knows what, I miss that Idaho riding. But then,
there's nothing like the HiLine trail in Idaho. I even saw bear sign,
tracks and scat, saw a deer, and found a golden Eagle's nest. So maybe
I'll stay around here for a few more years...

Yeah, I did Eastside for the first time last summer, and found it way
funner than Stack Rock, which I really like. My riding buddy rode *all*
the features on Eastside. Every log ride, jump, teeter totter, the
whole thing, even that steeply slanted log at the beginning.

I'm yet to ride Sweet Connie, the 13mi downhill, which we've just gotta
do.
