  1. Hi all.
I am riding in the midst of a Southern Hemispere Winter with temperatures of -6 degrees C.
I have the necessary clothing GoreTex jacket, ear warmers and even socks.

Some time ago I was reading an article that suggested that to restore the materials properties after washing, was to run a "warm" iron over the item.

Does anyone know whether this is an appropriate method to restore this product to it's original condition?

  2. Stick it in a dryer with low heat. Much safer than an iron. Use powdered detergent when you wash.

The outer material has a DWR (durable water repellent) coating saturated in it that makes the water bead up. You want the water to bead up because that leaves areas where there is no water. Water vapor can't escape through water droplets.
After time and use, the DWR wears off the oustide of the material and the jacket looses it breathability. Heating the material brings more DWR out to the surface.
Eventually you'll have to replace the DWR. Tectron is a good product for that.

    Thankyou Lumpy.
I will give the dryer a go.

    Warm and dry again.

Unfortunately, this is winter time. I went for a 2 hour ride the other day leaving about 0700. It was very foggy and as I climbed my favourite hill, I had trouble clearing my riding glasses. Everytime I wiped them, visibility seemd no better. I then realised that ice was forming on them. Ice was also forming on the leading edge of my gloves, overbooties, and at the join of my nicks to my leggings. It had also started to gather around the creases in my jacket at my elbows and shoulders.

Good weather!!!!!!!!!!!! It made the ride home even more determined and there was no way I was sitting outside at the usual coffee stop. It eventually reached a maximum of 5 degrees C. Lance probably went through this during his climb recons for the tour. Us mere mortals are just considered silly.
