  1. Just ran my local rail-to-trail in a dark, cold (35f) rain. Couldn't see
the path, so hit all the puddles. Feet stayed totally dry. Wouldn't work
for really long runs as the feet sweat, but it makes normal runs much more
pleasant. highly recommended. Buy a size larger than your shoe size so you
can wear over normal sox. Roomy shoes help also. Wore
waterproof/breathable rain pants, which cover the top of the Gore-Tex sox.

  5. can you buy a single pair of gore-tex socks for less than $50 after tax and or
    shipping?

"Storm Socks" you say? They're still $20/pair and the language in describing
it is water resistant, not "proof".

which brings us to the "latex" waterproof sock at $14 a pop

what's the frugal runner to do? boy those zip-loc freezer bags are looking
    better by the day....

At least they'll keep the blood of the marathon course. ;-)

Forget about keeping your feet dry and instead think about the wider goal of
how to keep them warm and comfortable.

I've got these and use them for skiing. I've also got neoprene socks I use
for cycling in cold weather, but they're not waterproof.

Actually they're Rocky Gore-Tex oversocks I got last year on sale for about
$20. Pretty expensive retail when I just looked them up now - about $50.

I've used plastic bags before. Messy and effective short term. I got the
Gore-Tex ones for foul weather trail running and hiking.

What kind of a imp would be afraid of getting your feet wet?
