Starting back up to what goal? Unless you are a competitive
sprinter then hit the road, and leave the track behind.

If a track workout helps people get their mileage in, I say
go for it. Its still more interesting and more realistic
than indoor treadmills. (Tracks bore me.)

Well-intentioned or otherwise, this IS the right question to
ask. Without knowing where you want to go, no one can tell
you how to get there.
As for the track, I use it once or twice a week, and run on
the roads the rest of the time (unless I'm running trails, a
new habit I've picked up and enjoy tremendously).
Not only is the track running good to provide an accurate
measure of your current ability, but it provides the
opportunity to do safe speedwork with precision. Far from
being boring, if you only go once or twice a week, it is a
welcome "change of pace" (so to speak).

Track workouts and speedwork are not necessarily the same
thing. When starting out, the track can be about the safest
place to be--an even, soft surface, less likely to cause
injury than asphalt--as long as you resist the temptation to
go too fast.
The best workout is to just cover some distance. I have
incoming high school runners that have not been in a running
program just go out there and cover 3+ miles a day.
Gradually, they run more and walk less. When they can run
(with little walking) 15-20 miles a week, we start
intervals. You might look through the rec.running faq for
intervals and speed work, but don't do this until you can
cover some distance comfortably (you should be able to run
and talk at the same time).

So is farting (more interesting than a treadmill).

Ok that's a goal, but what is your purpose? Weight control?
To just be healthier? To be a competitive runner? These
questions interest me, because the whole obsession with
speed is interesting.
i don't really know when i sounded like i was obsessed with
speed to you.. but my purpose is to get in good shape (lose
weight, build endurance) and able to do complete some 5 &
10Ks at a 8-9 min mile pace. i don't enjoy running in
traffic, and unless i'm finding a trail or park, i figured
the track would give me a decent workout...
