Good quality jerseys/shorts ?

I've still got the first Performance and Cannondale jerseys I bought 5
or 6 years ago. One of the later ones has started pulling a thread in
one of the (short) sleeve seams. I cut the thread off once a month
and keep riding.

Has Performance gotten cheaper in the last two years, or do I just
treat the jerseys right? Wash only with other bike clothes (prevents
uncomfortable pilling), hang to dry instead of dryer.

I don't know, I got some performance low cost clothing and it is all holding
up quite well so far.
I bought enough to last a week or so. Plus since I am still losing weight I
didn't want to get a lot of high priced name stuff that may not fit later.
I typically wash them all once a week now instead of at the end of each
ride, as I got a weeks worth of clothing to wash then,
I usually commute to and from work 3-4 times a week 23 miles one way, so
they get pretty grungy by then from all of this Texas humidity.
And I still get in a ride or two on the weekend too.

I have some Performance shorts that are five years old and going strong.
They were the top of the line eight panel shorts at the time.
Performance/Nashbar sell different "grades" of clothing, and the fancier
stuff is indeed very nice 😉 Pearl Izumi stuff is good too, just don't pay
retail for it, unless cost isn't an issue. I got a couple of those cheap
Italian Merilina Jerseys off the net last year, and though they look
great, and are nice and long, the stitching is already unraveling. :/ Good
thing I'm handy with a needle and thread.

I find washing in cold and line drying is your best bet, laundering seems
to be the enemy of cycling gear.

After using a pair of Performance shorts, then Pearl Attack, my wife gave me
a pair of Pearl Ultrasensors -- man they feel good. More money, but they are
worth it. And I heartily agree with cold-water wash and air dry.

As for jerseys, I tend to wear the ones that I got from a ride, or a fun one
that makes me smile. Again, if they're going to last 5 years, price isn't
everything.

Performance uses several different manufacturers for their jerseys.
Some of them are pretty good. Some are terrible. You can usually
tell which is which from the feel of the fabric and the sewing quality.
Unfortunately, this is difficult by mail order. Figuring out sizing
is also difficult by mail order, since the different suppliers use
different sizing systems.

Sizing has been my only problem with mail order. I order a couple
pairs of Nashbar shorts and, while they tell you the waist size, you
are on your own for the rest of the fit. Two different styles of the
Nashbar shorts (both 8-panel, higher quality) don't even reach my
hipbone.

You might give some of the Voler stuff a try.

Better quality than most of the Performance stuff, but not much more $$$

I agree, I find Voler stuff consistently good quality and reasonably
priced (particularly during sales). A nice feature for mail-order
clothes buying is that they include a pre-paid mailer envelope so the
cost of returns isn't such an issue.

The only other brand I have lots of experience with is PI. Since they
fit me well and last a long time, I don't have too much of a problem
with their prices. The only "bargain" shorts that have worked for me
were Voler.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, if you exchange, they don't charge you for the
return or the second shipment.

I have some old PI shorts that are made from some material that's very
different from Ultrsensor-type stuff. I think they were marketed to the
MTB sector several years back. The material is much heavier, but more of
a mesh (without being see-through) if that makes sense. I'd love to find
more shorts like this since they are incredibly durable, yet
comfortable. I haven't seen anything like them anywhere.

I've been getting a lot of use out of a Nashbar Transwick jersey (I
only have one, and I just wash, line dry and wear it over and over) and a
couple of Nike Dri-Fit shirts for shorter rides. I have some other
jerseys that I picked up from eBay, but they don't breath as well as the
Transwick (it's hot and humid in Western PA). The jersey is holding up
very, very well, and was very inexpensive.

For shorts, I wear the cheapie stuff from Dunham's sporting goods for
shorter rides (up to 20 miles) and then I break out the nicer Sugoi shorts
for longer rides. With some chamois cream and a decent saddle, it all
works out well.

I have yet to invest in some good shoes. I have a budget pair of
Specialized shoes and the best thing I can say about them is that the
recessed cleats make walking easy. They're heavy and they flex too much.
I'm cheap, however, so I'm not willing to spend a lot of money on
replacements right now.
