Good price on a trek

Personally, $600 for a Trek 1000 doesn't sound all that out of the ordinary to me. When the '06 models come out you can probably find the '05 models for less at most bike shops. Don't get married to a brand though just because your PX has it - although no taxes probably helps. The "fit" of the bike is going to be more important than saving $50, especially if that's the difference between riding it and hanging it in the garage to collect dust.

Doc's right about the fit. If it don't fit-its gonna sit. (that was bad)
But $600 for a TREK 1000 is about right. Look around at LBS and get fitted. The PX may have your size. If you're OCONUS, check the local shops. I think you can still get a VAT refund if you buy on the economy. Good luck.

I have nothing substantive to add, but this reminds me of my first road bike purchase about 4 years ago. I was in Germany shopping on the economy and had basically selected the bike I was comfortable with getting at the time (low-end c-dale) but hadn't made the leap yet. Then one day was in the PX on unrelated business, and for the first time ever noticed that they had a single road bike on the top shelf - and it was - you guessed it - the same low end c-dale I had been thinking about - AND it was the same size I had already test-ridden at a local shop. The best part - buried under the display rack where you could hardly read it was a sign reading "all bikes over $500 are 50% off". This bike was the ONLY bike there over 500 bucks! I grabbed a clerk to verify and she said that sale ended yesterday. I said go get your supervisor and if you give me the deal I'll climb up to that shelf, get the bike down myself, and walk straight to the register, no questions asked. 10 minutes later I was driving home with my shiny new toy. I had to get it tuned up and stuff of course, but damn 50% is 50% (and no tax!).

Anyway, I like that story. The cycling gods were trying hard to lure me into the sport. It worked and that bike has been retired for a while now. Served me well though. Good luck.

Roadhog, that has to be the best story about how anyone got into riding on here. Just awesome.

I am OCONUS and went to the local LBS here in heidelberg and right now with the poor euro to dollar rate and the prices they had I wont be going that rout for a starter bike. That trek was the first roadbike they have had at the px. I am not even sold on the idea of getting a roadbile while I am here as the canondale mtb serves my riding needs fairly well. I had assumed I would wait until I got back to the states to get a roadbike again but then saw that trek and it got me thinking 🙄

I can imagine the exchange rate limiting your options. That's too bad. It was pretty bad when I left a year ago and I think it has only gotten worse. By the time I left it was hard to take the family out to eat much anymore (on the economy) with the euro rate. When I first showed up it was an entirely different story....

The story I mentioned above was from the PX at Leighton Barracks in Wurzburg. I can't remember which one, but one of the Kaserne's is well known for having a better than average sporting goods selection. I never visited it so can't say for sure, but I want to say it was either Wiesbaden or Graf or something. Ask around and see if anyone else has heard that (or ask the people at the PX I guess). If what I'm saying is true, it might be worth giving them a ring and seeing if they have something. The PX's do seem to usually have exactly 1 road bike, so you have to be pretty lucky with size, etc to land one with them. If that doesn't work out it is possible to find good deals on ebay and you might be able to find someone willing to ship to deutschland. Definitely some risk involved with ebay purchases, but also some very good deals too - especially if its your last resort. I bought a brand new c-dale r1000 off ebay and the transaction went great and the bike has been flawless for 2000 miles now.

I know it's not that big of a deal, but I think I just got a 06 TREK 1000 for $600 at the "local" bike shop. I thought it was the 05 but now I'm not sure. I'll let you know.

...don't flame. I'm just making an assumption, and I know what that means.. but yeah, I payed $600 for it.
