Well, I do know her. She has authorised to tell me that she is neither
French nor a lady - not in the sense of being a conventional conformist
anyway.

I think it is interesting to compare some of the postings in this
thread with those in the 'Giving the Countryside Mass Appeal' thread.
There one can find lots of harrumphing about how we don't need all this
pc nonsense, we are all men of reason with an innate sense of fair
play, we are open to foreigners, they are always welcome, if they don't
want to come that's their problem and we don't need any of this social
engineering rubbish etc etc.

But as soon as a woman with a non-UK name posts here she is the subject
of stereotyped comments which are, at best, most kindly described as a
bit laddish. At worst the language could be a lot harsher. Perhaps we
are not as open and as welcoming in the countryside to people from
other cultures as we would like to think?
