It's only ONE thread. I haven't seen a newsreader
that keeps you stuck in a thread since the days
of 2400 baud modems.

When I can keep up I read all on-topic posts and
threads. I've glanced at one posting per day in
that thread and marked the rest of the posts in
it read, and I haven't even post the subject
line in my kilfile.

That's what subject killfiles are for. ;-)
Shortly after the hurricane, I set up key word filters that included
"Hurricane", "Katrina", "FEMA", etc.

I've only seen mostly diet posts since then.
