Last week I got really lucky... I posted a commute report and complained about not having a junker to ride it is almost like I asked and someone was listening...
Last Friday I found a department store "full suspension" bike out for the garbage... Not much wrong with it... rear brake cable is frozen in the housing... One flat tire (still holding air three days later) It looks like someone tried to "fix" a few things... Thankfully they didn't strip any bolts while they were at it... I should have it on the road as soon as I get a few minutes to fix it up... It's not pretty but it works! This past Saturday while walking the dog Carla and I found a neato circa 1980's girls mtb... Complete with 5 speed indexed thumbies and canti brakes and it is in mint condition... agian out for the garbage... I can only guess it was bought with the best of intentions and 20 years later it was alloted to the trash heap... Perfect fit for Carla... We studied it over and Carla said all she could find wrong is the rear brake was soft... I made a couple of turns on the barrel adjuster and it is perfect. When we got home I pumped up the tires... The tires didn't have any dry rot. Double plus bonus it is all purple! So we both have a commuter/grocery getter... Life is good!

I visit a number of tony suburban towns in the area each spring for their cleanup weekends. I've picked up a sweet Bianchi tourer with a pump and tools that needed a new chain and some lube, Peugeot commuters, perfect Schwinns with flat tires. The common thread is flat tires. Amazing. But, their wastefullness is my benefit. I either give them to friends or sell them and spend the money on frivilous things, like new bike stuff. /s

Here in Idaho, dumpster shopping is quite a popular social event. Especially right after the Universities get out and kids can't take big things home in their cars....
