I recently borrowed a bike from a buddy and started riding. I don't like riding in traffic, so I stick to the sidewalks.
Problem is, the sidewalks around where I live are very uneven and jagged. The bike I borrowed is meant for pure speed--very light and very thin tires. Today I got a pinch-flat. I am constantly worried that the frame is going to collapse from all the jolting.
I think I need a stronger bike---one more suited to the stresses of city riding. I assume I need something more akin to a mountain bike.
Can you guys recommend one or more quality bikes for a beginner that will be plenty sturdy and yet still be somewhat affordable?

Sounds like you need a bike more suited to your riding. A good city bike should do the job. Specialized, Giant, Kona et all have some offerings. Of course, it has to be single-speed 😉

In my part of the world, that leads directly to a ticket. If you are a vehicle, other than a wheelchair or similar, you belong on the road, not the sidewalk. A better bet may be to just buy a good mountain bike and stay away from ALL paved surfaces ;-))

Since you mentio riding in the city I wan't to advice you on city bikes first. If you really know you wan't to do offroad also then you should not listen to my Hybrid sales pitch but get an MTB. My city bike is a Gary Fisher Utopia. I use it for commuting to work and getting around town. It is very fast on asphalt, considering it is not a roadbike, but can still be used on hardpacked dirtroads and gravel. I ride it all year with Nokian studded tires in the winter. It is a so called Hybrid. Some people say it's not really good for anything but that isn't true since it is very good for riding around in the city. I have an MTB for going offroad and a Roadbike for cruising in the Peloton.

Giant, Trek, Kona, Specialized, KHS and a few others have fairly affordable hardtail bikes (front suspension only.)
The key is to go to a local bike shop (LBS) and get the one that fits best. Even a well-fitted used bike from an LBS is better than the best ill-fitting high-dollar bike. -- Jonesy
