  1. That new variety seems to be taking over the usual

Try one from Del Monte. (All the others are just copycats and are not
    as good)

I don't know about now, but pineapple from Del Monte used to come from
Thailand (as opposed to Hawaii). It was much sweeter and juicier than the
    Dole pineapples.

Unless of course you go to the Dole plantation.
Pineapple is one of my favorite foods. I love it when it's really good,
sweet and juicy. When we went to Oahu, we had the opportunity to stop by the
Dole plantation and sample some different varieties of pineapple. Wow. Each
one was as good as the next. They also have a little cafe/souvenir spot,
which had some of the most delicious pineapple I've ever eaten. Pineapple on
a stick, pineapple sundaes, pineapple whip, chocolate covered
pineapple...you name it, it was there. Add to that all the roadside stands
where you could stop and they'd use a machete to peel, clore and slice the
pineapple while you wait, and you can imagine all the pineapple I had during
the time we were on the island.

The unfortunate side effect: I've yet to taste a pineapple here that tastes
as good as they did there.

Pineapple, a bromiliad, is grown in many parts, Philapines, Mexico,
Central America, etc., and there are a few different types of
Pineapple. The various company's whose labels are found on pineapple,
even Chiquita, contract with and/or own plantations all around the
planet. The vast majority of Hawiian pineapple is exported canned, not
fresh. Ripe pineapple does not ship very well so for export it is
picked well before fully ripe... and once picked pinapple does NOT
ripen further. Very, very few folks on the US mainland have ever
tasted a fully ripened pineapple, except from a can. Btw, pineapple is
native to Central America, there were no pineapples growing in Hawaii,
or anywhere else, since relatively recently. Once picked pineapple
softens, but from fermentation (rotting), NOT ripening. Stand your
stupidmarket pineapple upside down, leaves down, for a couple of days
before opening to redistribute the sugars, however little there is
contained in a prematurely harvested pineapple. Btw, pineapple is
    considered the world's largest berry.

And -- more fool you -- even if pineapples *were* berries, they wouldn't be
    the world's largest. From Encarta:

There are several different types of berries. A true berry has a
relatively soft pericarp with a thin exocarp or skin. Examples of true
berries include the tomato, pepper, eggplant, grape, and persimmon. A pepo
is a berry with a comparatively thick exocarp, or rind — cantaloupe,
watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber, and squash are pepos. A hesperidium is a
berry with a leathery skin containing oils. All citrus fruits, including
oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, are hesperidiums. Some fruits with the
word berry in their names, such as raspberry and strawberry, develop
differently and are not really berries at all.

Since pineapples are smaller than both pumpkins and watermelons, I guess
your claim is wrong. But what should anybody expect from an ignoramus like

Actually, it's YOU who is mistaken, Bob. Pineapples ARE berries. In fact,
one pineapple fruit consists of aggregate berries embedded in a fleshy stem
(what you would call the core). It is the largest aggregate berry. Your

Can you show any reference to support your statement that pineapples are

berry) or watermelon (as mentioned in the Encarta article I quoted). So

The page linked to DOES state:
"The fruit type is a multiple of berries, formed from the fusion of
adjacent flowers on the spike, and development of ovaries into the fleshy,
    edible portion."

Next time you get on your trusty Google, look up "What fruit is a cylinder
of berries?" By Chelsie Vandaveer. This article also clearly states: "The
pineapple inflorescence is a raceme of single flowers arranged tightly along
the stem. It is an aggregate fruit consisting of fleshy berries fused
together, one berry from each flower."

And from the UCLA website (that's a University, Bob, where they teach things
such as this): " The ovary of each becomes a berry that normally lacks seeds
because the flowers are not cross-pollinated; therefore, each of the
polygonal units of the pineapple is a ripened ovary, and the berries
coalesce into a solid structure, called a multiple fruit"

Are you noticing a trend here, Bob?

Well, I'll be damned. Dunno why my "Find text on this page" didn't find
    that.

I stand corrected, but now I'll make a nitpick of my own: If a pineapple is
a CLUSTER of berries then a single pineapple isn't a single berry. (For a
similar reason, strawberries are not considered berries in the botanical
sense.) Furthermore, if the fruit doesn't contain seeds, then pineapple
fails to meet the definition of a "true" berry, which means that it couldn't
be considered the largest "true" berry. And if "false" berries are included,
pineapples are still smaller than watermelons.

But I'm willing to concede the point, since I have no animosity toward YOU.

largest berry, can easily top 20 pounds.

Ignoramus, when you post a link which is supposed to support your
    argument,
maybe the page ought to say something which *does* support your argument.
The link you posted doesn't say that the pineapple is ANY kind of berry!
    You
might as well have posted a link to the Chuckle of the Day. In fact, I
*did* get a chuckle out of this passage from your link:

"Cultivated pineapple has gone through an astoundingly narrow genetic
    bottleneck"

It appears that you and pineapple have something in common! (I mean
    BESIDES
the lack of a brain or spine. And when it comes to functioning sex
    organs,
    pineapples have you BEATEN.)

What claim are you going to make next? That the largest berry is a Great
    Blue Whale?

    Bob

Thanks for the concurrence but you're really wasting your energy on the
juvenile psychotic, he's hell bent on trying to find fault where none
exists simply because he's ENVIOUS of my superiour knowlege... the
moron (who is definitely a functional illiterate, incapable of
comprehending all those strings of big woids is why he never scrolled
down far enough to find where it clearly states about
'pineapple/berries', you had to literally spoon feed the jerk with the
quote and he still can't get it) must really think I just looked that
stuff up yesterday, not... and it's certainly obvious to me that
neither did you. Bob is truly a [censored], who knows nothing about plants,
    of course he knows nothing[period].

When Del Monte Gold pineapples first came out, they had seeds in them.
(I'm not sure if they still do) My brother grew some. That's probably
how Dole and Chiquita caught up with their gold pineapples so fast.
