  1. During my longish running race yesterday, I finally understood why
cyclists pay out on triathletes so damn much. I knew some were bad...

.... it appears they all flock to the Gold Coast. Oh dear, I saw so much
bling moving at about 22km/h. One of my mates, Adam, said he nearly ran
down someone on a $10000 bike... all the gear and no idea.

"An awe-inspiring collection of expensive bikes, poorly fitted and
    incompetently ridden."

"ran someone down"? as in literally, on foot?

    🙂

yeah well, no comment on that from me ... I got a new bike and shoes
but not much technique and fitness ... though I have delusions of
grandeur in racing E Grade criteriums and taking part in some kind
    of triathlon

    😉

hmmm, expensive and incompetently ridden I can picture, but I would have
thought that they would be at the very least properly setup!

I guess it's all relative. I'm sure Luke Bell and co probably talk amongst themselves, "look at that gumby, all bling and just wobbling about at 40km/h - I had to swerve to go past and all but blew him over with the vortex from my new disc wheel"

    Better a $10K bike than a $80K car.

Yes, literally, on foot! Adam ran the 25km in about 1:45, that's about
14.3 km/h. Scary to imagine someone on bling riding that slow...

At the risk of stereotyping, Triathlon is a sport with a big corporate
presence - the BRW corporate challenge is the obvious example of this.
That means a lot of people with a reasonable income and not much spare
time. They'll buy their way to success, which doesn't really work that
    well.

    $10,000 bikes, $10 bodies.

    Yep, it's tri-season!

  7. geez lighten up you guys ..... ...... even newbies have to start somewhere. At least these over-spec'd people are out on a bike and not driving 2 km in the land cruiser to the night-owl for some more smokes and coca-cola. Sure it might be a lot to spend on a bike, but don't criticize someone just because they can afford their dream bike. I've seen plenty of unfit people in $250 ASICS running shoes too ... .... ....

Besides, if these guys continue to totally suck [censored] at cyucling / triathlon, it just means that some sweet second hand rigs with next to no miles on them will appear in the trading post / on ebay 😄 😄

To be totally honest, my criticism is of the bike retailers. Of course
they want to sell their expensive bikes, but I feel it is totally
irresponsible for them to sell very expensive bikes and then not throw
in a proper fitting for the cyclist and not teach them how to ride
    properly.

My first bike was $2500 but worth way more (other people were selling
them 2nd hand for that much, saying they were worth $4000). Max made me
ride it on the mag trainer for twenty minutes with an approximate fit,
so I could get warmed up and then have a proper fit. Then he told me to
stay there and practice clipping and unclipping until I was confident.
Then the only reason he let me out of the shop with it was because he
knew my coach was very strict on learning how to ride before going
    cycling.

I cringe when I see people riding like those people I saw down the coast
    - but I cringe because from what I can see they were ripped off (and
maybe they were too busy to do the research). I certainly saw more
examplers on Sunday than I have in Brisbane.

I'd love to keep bagging triathletes, but while I'm regularly getting my ass handed to me on a plate in A grade by some ironman guys in our club I'll just have to keep my gob shut 🙂 They're like energizer bunnys, they just get the the front and keep on going. I take a turn at the front and they come round and have another go.....freaks I tell ya....

Plus, you can ride past them on an old steel fixed or SS smilling and
    waving.

Since you like expensive bikes Hippy, thought you might like a look at my TT/Tri toy. 7 months on and I still get my butt kicked by the missus for buying it.

Whatever happened to "I've just borrowed this bike from one of the lads, dear. He'll let me know when he wants it back."?

A: "No, I just polished my old one. Funny...you don't usually notice."

Bike shops are adept at helping you to hide the purchase. One owner
told me he regularly splits the bill three ways between cheque, savings
    and credit.

I've been told that hiding the offending item for a while allows the question "Is that a new bike/carbon widget/set of pedals/pair of bike shoes etc?" to be truthfully answered "No dear, I've had it/them for ages" 😄

  18. I wishI could have hid this purchase as at times I get an ear full. Luckily though due to the expense I asked if I could buy it and after some constant pestering she agreed, which now gives me the come back of I asked and you said yes, so stop WHINGING.............lol.

Only negative is I dont think I will be getting a new road bike any time soon. So that is a purchase I might have to use some of the above advice on if I do it on the sly.

  19. One of my mates put a new roadie together over a period of two years. Each component was acquired sperately online once sufficient funds had been squirrelled away under the nose of the credit department. He had limited funds to work with so this is why it took so long. He had each component delivered to his office, and he kept all the bits there for the full two years. He assembled it at work and only brought it home when his current ride had been sold.

But the clever part was making the new rig look like his old bike in terms of colour, decals, bar tape etc. He did a great job. The old bike was a caad 5 with chorus. The new bike is a Klein Quantum (with cannondale decals now of course) with record. The wheels are Zipp 404's with no decals. Kept his old saddle - who ever wants to sell a favourite saddle

ok that is seriously bordering on..... mental institution time....

I could never do this, I bought new pedals fairly recently and did not tell my wife, we were off together to a triathlon one morning and she piped up, "is that a new pair of thingys on the bottom of the bike", I stood their flabber-gasted... I was shocked and at the time so impressed I could not lie to her.....
