Another route is the A5 as far as the Chirk by-pass (Halton roundabout) The
A5 here goes left. Carry straight on for the A483(Wrexham) The take the A525
signposted for Ruthin and Denbigh. If you want to rejoin the A5 you can do
so by taking the A543 out of Denbigh. This joins the A5 at Pentrefoelas.
Alternatively you can stay on the A525 to St. Asaph and the along the A55.

Definately avoid Lhangollen that weekend.

Depends where exactly you are going, consider a more Southernly route, the
A55 goes a long way round if you are coming from the South.

Depends on what part of north wales you're going to. If you're heading for
Rhinogs or Cader, or you like a good country drive, then that would be your
best bet. But...

The further south you go, the worse the roads tend to get (or rather, you
have to travel on single carriageway, bendy roads, stuck behind a tractor
for longer, like the a470).

If you're going to Ogwen area, or nearby, then i'd imagine that the A55 is
your best bet timewise, though it seems like much further. (Imagine if you
go via Welshpool, i know it's another 90mins to Caernarfon on a good day.
Takes about an hour to go from Queensferry (english border) to Ogwen, mabye
a bit longer. )

Or get a train to Betws Y Coed! ;-)

I believe the Eisteddfod in at the Faynol Estate near Bangor, so the A5
should be fine. The conjestion will be centered around the Britania
Bridge area on local roads and the A55 where it crosses onto Anglesey.

The International Eisteddfod is in Llangollen 4th-10th July.

The National Eisteddfod is at Faenol, near Bangor, early August.

To be honest, if you are going through Llangollen this Friday at later
than 7.30 pm, (evening concert start time) will be no worse than usual
friday on A5.

Even on Friday morning and early afternoon, you won't be held up much.
If however you are heading for northern Snowdonia, I'd whizz along the
A55, but beware speed cameras and unmarked cars. Lindstrom's army will
be out in force on the A55 all weekend as usual.

Well, it beats catching burglars and drug dealers I suppose.....

Nah, not me - I like my home comforts (i.e. proper bed, running water,
central heating etc) far too much to take root in anything as

Yeah, the train has opened (or it had, i dont recall if the more recent
floods closed it off again!).

At the worst, it has coaches linking the closed bits.

And i know what you mean about the A470 being a big road compared to Mid
wales. Something like the a458 is again a slowish road, but considering the
OP needs, i cant see this being too different to the A5.

So i'll rephrase it.

Stuck behind a tractor on A470, or a caravan and artic on the A5?

Speaking as someone who has to go across that bridge (Britannia) several
times a week, combined with the fact that they'll still be painting the
Menai Bridge at that time (which is already causing queues at the Britannia)
I predict absolute gridlock when the Eisteddfod is on!
