country could get one of those. I recommend a birth certificate or

Never had a problem using a driver's license entering in a car, but it has
been a couple of years, so maybe you do need a passport now. It seems every
time I enter they ransack my car. Not a very good welcome, but what can you
do?

I don't think that getting into Canada is a problem, its getting back into the
States that is. You will have to have something showing your citizenship.

If you really want to be on the safe side bring your passport. I difer
to Doug if he has crossed the border more recently than I have (2002).
On a just pre 9/11 flight into Canada I showed my driver's license and
got some serious questioning that could have been avoided with a
passport. But I got in anyway.

If you have no passport and you really want to be on the safe side
bring your birth certificate.

I regularly cross back and forth over the border. The Canadian guards
are more thorough than the American guards I find. Whatever the case, I
would just have your passport with you. Make sure that you aren't
carrying any firearms, drugs, or explosive devices.

You're entering through Buffalo-Niagara falls and then what? If you're
entering back through Michigan, I don't think you can get over the
Sarnia/Port Huron Bluewater Bridge by bicycle. You may want to check the
Windsor/Detroit Ambassador Bridge. Here are the links to the two crossings:

There is also a ferry service that runs from around Sarnia to Algonac,
Michigan. I'm sure that they will take bicycles. To get there, you will
want to take Hwy. 22 (just outside of London, Ontario) West toward
Sarnia, and then take Hwy. 21 South to Hwy. 78. Head West on 78 and this
will take you to Wallaceburg. In Wallaceburg, take Dufferin Avenure West
and this should take you out to the ferry. This would be a really nice
ride too.

It's the opposite here, when go you south from Vancouver. When I go up
there, the guards ask me about things like firearms, then wave me through.
Coming back to the US, it's the third degree.

I live in Tonawanda, NY - about half way between the Peace Bridge and the
Rainbow bridge. I regularly do a route that crosses at the peace bridge into
Canada, then back to the US at the Rainbow bridge. I have never been asked
for more than my drivers license. If I cross with ANYONE under 18, including
my own children, I do bring their birth certificates.

I've found the majority of the customs agents to be very welcoming and
accomodating to bicyclists. Just be sure to treat them with repect - much
like you may expect someone to treat you.

well, i was born abroad so a birth certificate (if i had one) won't work
either.

personally i'd try the lake of the woods or the BWCA. getting into canada
from minnesota has never been, uhh, difficult. mostly they let the mosquitos
and weather do the dirty work. you'd be going out of your way to find a
manned border crossing.

When I travel from Canada to USA I must have my birth certificate
(minimum) or a passport. Plus picture ID, eg: driver's license. A good
attitude helps a bunch too.

Right on! When I did my trip from the bottom of Texas to the top of
Minnesota, I had to ride in Manitoba for about 40 miles to get to the NW
angle of Minnesota. On entering the angle (US), there was a sign that said
to check in at "Jim's corner" - 8 miles ahead. When I got there, there was
a camera set up that didn't work. On re-entering Manitoba, there was no
control at all. Coming and going from Manitoba to the Minnesota mainland,
there was a manned post, but I wasn't asked for an ID in either direction.
Same this year entering and leaving Quebec; same in 1994 at Niagara Falls;
same a couple times at Sault Ste. Marie, once at Pt Huron, once at Portage
La Prarie, and once south of Vancouver.

BUT, in 1994, a friend and I re-entered the US at Detroit. They wouldn't
allow bikes on the bridge, so we hitched a ride, and got out before US
customs. That made them suspicious, and we were hassled. It was helpful on
that occasion to have a pssport along.

Neither of these bridges allow bicycle use. Plan to hitch hike.
(Stand in front of the "bicycles prohibited" sign and stick out your
thumb. This is safe, easy, and free.)

I worked in the Algonac area for a few months, and never knew about
a ferry from Sarnia. There is one from a couple of the ritzy islands,
either US or CDN.
