Web -- We're in the same boat, I'm just 2 years older, 3 months more into it, and had a layoff 3 years longer. Welcome back.
So far for me, I've only been able to increase the distance I ride, but definitely not the speed. Is your heartrate high, are you puffing hard, or are your legs giving out? For me, it's the heartrate -- I hit real high levels easily, which makes me back off. The legs and lungs usually have more to go.
Watch the thread I started yesterday on knowing when to start interval training.

how often do you ride it? it takes TIME and
increased efforts and lots of base miles.
increase the 24m to 35min then 45 ect. -
There are some really good tips in this forum, although sometimes it gets a bit confusing for beginners like me. I've been doing competitive rowing for a couple of years and have just started competitive cycling. The principles of training are pretty similar. So like me, hang in there. Your fitness will soon build as you do more miles on the bike.
I bought the Carmichael/Armstrong book recently and that has good programs to follow for your level. I went straight to the intermediate level as I had a reasonable fitness base.
But I'm still looking for some good hints, especially when people go past me in races, like I'm standing still. But I did manage to pass a few in my last race - so it's encouraging.

Cheers Spider thanks for the info will take a trip down to the local book shop and look for the books hope your cycling come on leaps and bounds. Got a cycling partner for 3 days a week i hope that will help me too been down to the local heath shop today and brought some ginseng to help release the power (if its there )
lol
i am aiming to train 6 days a week till ive got some sort of fitness and speed then im hoping to increase to about 1 hour over the next few weeks or months (probably the later) but still i wont give up i need to do this its been on my mind for some time now and the motivation is there its just the mucsle that i need -
ello its only me and good news i think ive been training 5 days a week just lately and have not only increased my base miles but also the speed at which i do it
im up to about 3 x 30 mile rides with 2 of at least 50miles avg speed is 18.7 miles per hour i am working out at the gym too just light training (circuts)to increase power which is going well hoping to do my first century around christmas time legs feel good and strong now breathing is getting a lot better -
Good for you webby. Sounds like you are making some improvement. Good luck with that century, I haven't done one yet. I'll be doing a five day charity ride before Christmas which will have a couple of century treks, looking forward to that.
I did have my first win on the weekend in a 44km Graded Handicap race. I was in Div 5, the lowest Division. Started with two others, 5 mins. in front of Div 4 and 9 mins in front of Div3. Ended up riding on my own after about 14km. Some Div 3 guys caught me with 3 km to go. It was a windy day, so they had the advantage of riding in a bunch most of the way while I was on my own, punching into the headwind. Still I was in the sprint for the finish and ended up 4th across the line and first in my division. Averaged just over 30km/hr for the race which is the best speed average I've done so far.
I feel fitter and stronger every time I get on the bike now. It feels great and I love improving with each ride.
