  1. Any posters have any previous experience in linking together Tryfan,
Glyder Fawr/Fach, etc and Carnedau Dafydd/Llewelyn in a day. I
thinking of starting in the Ogwen Valley at SH 661 602 and doing the
    scramble up Tryfan first?

Not together. Tryfan and the Glyders can be a decent walk on it's own,
although much depends on your choice of route up Tryfan and Glyder Fach.

I'd recommend you make an early start. I'd definitely get Tryfan out of the
way first, I wouldn't want to have to scramble down that at the end of the
    day.

Only as part of a Welsh 3000s but one of those trips did involve a
return to Ogwen but none of that really helps in this case. :-)

As Paul says the obvious start is up the North Ridge of Tryfan. You can
avoid Bristly Ridge or take it in depending on how you feel about
scrambling and descend via the Devil's Kitchen easily enough. The
obvious continuation is on to Ogwen Cottage and straight up the South
ridge of Pen yr Ole Wen. Personally I would walk a long way to avoid
that steep climb (or the descent) but the alternative route from Idwal
to Glen Dana to take the easier East ridge is a bit rough. You could
return by the South ridge of Llewelyn, Pen yr Helgi Du and that dreadful
service road to Ffynnon Llugwy. I suspect that there is a better route
back than that but it is getting too late for me to bother consulting
    the map.

89 miles as the crow flies,
considerably more as the walker drives.

  4. To me these are two separate walks. If Tryfan and the Glyders isn't
enough, then I'd go on to Y Garn rather than all the way down and all
the way up the other side. But if I was going to do what you plan I'd
do what Roger suggests for the Carneddau, having parked at the end of
the "dreadful service road" and headed for Tryfan from there. Would
save you a bit of tarmac.

If you park at or near Gwern Gof Uchaf (or camp) you can head up the
Heather Terrace path and either take the terrace ascent or (preferably)
continue round to the North Ridge.

I agree the east ridge is preferable but like you I think if you cross
the road at Ogwen it's as well to grit your teeth and slog up the south
    ridge.

From Pen y Helgi Du it's a pleasant descent down the broad, grassy
south ridge (Y Braich). A bit of cute navigation is needed to find the
most sensible route across the drainage channel and pop out onto the A5
at Helyg. Then cross the road and take the parallel path back to the car
(or tent). The Carneddau circuit is very nice indeed, though with the
caveat that I did it starting up the east ridge of PyOW and didn't
include the Glyders circuit first!! You sound a fitter man than I, Gunga
    Din.

It is a long time since I have done anything that hard. These days I try
and plan for no more than 15 miles and 4000 feet of ascent and even that
has been beyond me on some recent days.

As others have said that is quite a big day. In order to make it a bit
easier I would go up Glyder Fawr via Cwm Idwal / Llyn y Cwn first. Then
over Fach and down the path to the east of bristly ridge and up the
    south ridge of Tryfan.

The quickest and easiest way down to the base of the north ridge is
probably back down the south ridge and then along the heather terrace.
Head over to Glan Dena and up the east ridge of Pen Yr Ole Wen thence
    Dafydd & Llwelyn.

From Llewelyn you can go south to Bwlch Eryl Farchog / Pen yr Helgi Du
but you will end up with over a mile of trudging back along the valley
toyour car. To avoid that I would head back towards Dafydd and drop off
the ridge near SH 670 630 and head down to join the Glan Dena path at
    the top of Afon Lloer.

Still quite a big day at 15 miles & 2000m.

That's what long summer days are for!!! As I'm in North Wales for a
week I'd like to plan a BIG DAY similar to the Ennerdale Horseshoe, so
around 20+miles and 2,000+metres ascent fits the bill nicely.

Seriously, thanks for all your suggestions.

I'll report back on here just before the Wasdale weekend but if you
make the Wasdale weekend I'm sure I'll be able to make a fantastic
story about the day and enter the biggest liar competition!!!

    Cheers David.

  9. I am not sure I'd want to do this. From memory even though Tryfan plus
Gyderau and back to Ogwen was only five miles, we were all knackered by the
end and the thought of re-ascent up Carneddau might be too much. The path
up onto Carneddau was also very indicstinct too. The only other way you
could do this would be to have two cars and leave one accessible for the
back of Carneddau and the other in Ogwen and walk across between the two but
that would mean coming down Tryfan(which was an interesting exercise going
    up never mind down).

Yes that was the bit I was thinking about trying to avoid. It is a long
slog and not a descent I'd want to make when really tired because although
not difficult, it is the sort of place you could easily turn a knee or an
ankle and find yourself with a long hobble back.

I remember Steve and I doing Tryfan and me thinking 'that doesn't look
    like much of a hill'.

Yes, we had plans to extend the walk but were also too knackered.

The team on Expedition One did the Tryfan - Glyder circuit from the
Milestone layby in dreadful weather. Certain members of the party took
so long photographing other members of the party and every misty nic-nac
on the way up Tryfan that I nearly died of exposure waiting in the mist
and rain on the summit. I think it was on this trip that we took the
rough ground across the bundu back to the layby instead of going via
Ogwen Cottage but I could be wrong. ISTR I have been both ways in recent
years although I cannot recall the circumstances of the other trip.

We would have run out of time but I certainly couldn't have managed a
further 2500 feet of ascent that day.

It's a big BIG days walk as others have stated, but it is possible. I
camped at Gwen Gof Uchaf years ago and it's a great place to start a long
    walk like this.

Tryfan is steep and challanging, even it's descent on the south is hardish
and a scramble. Bristley Ridge can be avoided if you need to. Glyder Fach
and Fawr is easyish walking if I remember correctly. Descent down the
Devils Kitchen is a knee breaker - allow plenty of time for rests. From
Idwal Cottage it's a hard HARD slog up Pen yr Ole Wen (this will half kill
you by now) Once at the top a longish walk to Carnedd Llewelyn which I
think was easy for me. The only part I can't comment on is a direct route
down from there back to Uchaf.

Looking at the map and after writing the above, I'd probably start at Idwal
Cottage (but you'll have to pay parking) and start on Pen yr Ole Wen first.
This would leave you to climb Tryfan after the morning hordes and have
Kitchen's Devil last or collect Yr Garn if still feeling fit.

I thought "give over, more than that surely"? But no, Anquet says 15
miles, 2200m (don't you love mixed units?), Naismith time of 8.5 hrs.
Blimey, it actually starts to sound do-able. I must say I think both
halves of this are excellent in their own right so it would be a good
walk. Thinks - "must find the the correct start to Bristly Ridge one day".

I did it in a hurry in Tracklogs so probably missed out some of the

Ah, I was doing it right after all then. The last time out it was a
rather loose chimney with a final pull over the top on grass sods.

If there is a choice, I prefer steep ascent over steep descent any

    be run.
