Glue for helmet pads?

I've been using a pen-stick SuperGlue to restick the little velcro tabs on my Giro pneumo. These are
the velcro tabs that hold the sweat/fit/whatever pads in place. I tested it on an outside bit of the
foam and it was just OK. It melted the foam a bit, but it didn't bore through to the other side. It
could be that the volatiles in the glue are the nasties that melt the foam and maybe they evaporated
quickly. I'm not a chemist.

You could send an email to your helmet's manufacturer. Hmmm ... I'm going to email Giro :-)

Why don't you peel out the old velcro dots and replace them with new ones they are cheap enough. You
should be able to get them in hardware and craft shops.

My experience has been that the velcro "dots" kept coming unstuck. Tried new velcro "dots", still
kept coming off. Tried double sided tape, no good. All the glues I have tested on foam eat through
it. Ended up drilling some fine holes through the foam and sewing the velcro on with waxed thread.

My "stick on" velcro dots came off initially, but now superglue holds them fast to the polystyrene
foam. You can safely yank the velcro apart without removing the stuck dot.

One of my pads in the helmet came off a few weeks ago and before I left work to ride home I stuck it
on with glue from a "roll on" Glue Stick - one of the yellow ones, not sure of the brand name. It's
still stuck fast!

I have spoken to the old distributor for Giro and they said to use hobby glue or water based glue
such as PVA clean the foam and apply glue, wait till glue is almost dry 10-15 mins then apply wait
24 hours for it to dry.

All the helmets I know are based on polystyrene foam. Solvent based adhesives (e.g. contact
adhesives) dissolve the stuff nicely. Epoxies are safe on polystyrene - I have used them with
complete success. Test a small, unimportant part first in case your helmet is made of something
else. Water based glues (e.g. PVA) will not stand up to the rain and sweat. Cyanoacrylates ("super
glue"😉 will work for a while, but break down in time from exposure to water.
