Glittertind Norway

I was in Norway in August 1999. While we were there we
climbed Galdhoppigan and looked across to Glittertind, as
far as I can remember the summit was covered in snow, but
don't take my word on that. There are quite a few people
here who do a lot of walking in Norway.

According to the 1:100 000 map which is the only one to
hand, it might be possible, but certainly when I was there
in the middle of summer a few years ago we spent quite a
long time on snow (but not glacier ice so far as I
recall). I certainly wouldn't go on the assumption of not
needing crampons (but I'd think the 4-point instep version
would do).

Crossing the glacier on the way up Galdhopiggen a few days
later I nearly fell over a young lady sunbathing in the buff
which was an entirely unexpected treat.

The summit plateau is snow-capped all year round, and the
elevation is said to vary according to snow deposits. The
most frequently used routes on Glittertind do not involve
glacier crossings. The summit snow-field is without
crevasse dangers---no rope required---but it is liable to
be corniced on the north side, where there is a fine
precipice. By August the main routes are likely to be
largely snow free. I imagine that most do not bother with
an axe at that time of year.

I was up G'tind in superb weather in August quite some
years ago. My main recollection of the route from the west
is that it was easy but boulder-strewn. It is a fine
summit, but (like Galdhøppigen) it is likely to be fairly
busy on a nice day.

I'm going with an organised DNT trip (Den Norske
Turistforening). I haven't got crampons and was hoping to
use fabric boots as my size 14 leather boots are so heavy
they would spoil the trip.

crampons on Glittertind in August (1976 !!).

If you are on a DNT trip then they should give clear
information about equipment requirements. Any advice they
give about potential need for crampons should be reliable.
[I believe that DNT has an excellent safety record on its
organised summer tours.]
