Headed north on Saturday with my eleven year old daughter. Intention to camp at Tyndrum, do some low level walk and eat at the Coffee Shop. First surprise was that the campsite was not only closed but that the road access had been bouldered off. Went to old fallback the Red Sqirrel in Glencoe. This was very busy, but did appear to have been tidied up a little since my last visit over four years ago. The weather was lovely and we both enjoyed a campfire and a paddle in the river before heading to the Clachaig. Second problem, my daughter was not allowed in the bar, so instead of being able to enjoy the music we had to go and sit in the lounge. At least they let my labrador in! Third problem the chef was overwhelmed with orders and they stopped doing food just as we were trying to order!! Thank god for some pasta and a tin of tuna i had thrown into the back of the car. Our night in the campsite was regularly disturbed by drunks and all night parties. A chat with the owner confirmed that heavy drinkers/parties were becoming a problem. He thought that CCTV had displaced bevvy merchants from Glasgow town centre and that some of them at least were descending on him. He was patrolling until at least 2 am! This morning the weather was fine and my daughter and I enjoyed a stroll up into the Lost Valley. The scenery made up for everything. My daughter thought it was like something out of Lord of the Rings. Next time we are going to camp wild!!!!

Can anyone tell me if the campsite still going on the loch shore in Glencoe village? It used to be well kept and quiet.
I think I heard that the C&CC were opening a site in Gencoe? That would certainly not allow people who arte too immature or weak too hold their drink to keep others from enjoying the peace!

Strathfillan Wigwams at Auchtertyre is a nice place to camp. You get to use the cookhouse so no need to cook in the tent porch if it is persisting down.

It was pretty dramatic with the snow on the tops. A mix of old and new snow made the corrie headwall a little problematic on my way to Stop Coire Sgreamhach on the 5th. -- Phil Cook looking north over the park to the "Westminster Gasworks"

If you want something that looks like something out of Lord of the Rings, try Loch Avon in the Cairngorms. It has a set of menacing cliffs and crags at the head that always remind me of the mines of Moria!
