  1. So where the heck is Genova?

Granted, it IS the Giro d'Italia and far be it from me to
forbid anyone to use their native language to define
start/finish/intermediate points for their National Tour.

But what about all those Wannabe [censored] previewing the Tour
of Gallia Cisalpina? Have they no thought for the millions
of Anglophonic Uni-Lingualists who bought their map where
they buy their Slurpies only to discover that Genova is
    nowhere to be found?

Is it Genova Voltri? Or Genes (Where Jeans come from) or
    some other place?

Better still to help out idiots like Davey, why not just
    call it Genoa?

I shudder to think what's gonna happen if the Tour gets
    anywhere near Livorno or Fiorenza

I think Genova and Livorno are in the meat section and
    Fiorenza with the cheeses. HTH

Who cares? The only thing we have to find is the OLN
channel. Just so our Kirsten finds it, that's all that
    counts.

Dammit, they should just call it the Tour of Italy and
be done with it. Back in Glasgow, "Have you seen the
Giro?" was an altogether different question concerning
    welfare benefits.

In English it's called Genoa. It is on north-western coast
on the Med almost due south of Turin.

Why don't they just call it Genua?

Are you just trying to be funny since you just now noticed
that English speakers often change the spelling and
pronunciation of foreign (to them) names and locations?

I blame the French. They change the name of Spanish and Italian cities and then English adopts the French spelling - Seville, Florence, et al.

Of course the Italians are innocent when they refer to Paris
    as Parigi.

And how is this for the GrandDaddy of them all perpetrated
on the World at Large by the CisAlpine Gauls?

    Monaco di Baviera

Munich/Munchen if you can believe it!!

I'd been thinking about that one since this started, and
    I'd bet
Kyle who's probably getting about by train, because it's
    easy and
sensible is really concious of having to switch back and
    forth if he
even bothers. We gave up on the english language maps
    pretty quickly.

Yes, they are rather useless around here. I've been getting
by mostly by guessing; after all, with a little imagination
city names really aren't significantly different sounding
from each other in other languages (Monaco di Baviera
notwithstanding). Maylan, for example, or Chania.

I just buy that big Thomas Cooke schedule for trains.
Besides being very informative, it makes a pretty fair
    pillow.

At least it doesn't go anywhere else. The Italians just
might change more names than English speakers.
