i also remember that world famous photo of poor old Rene Haselbacher,
wobbling into the finish line with his torn shorts, naked butt showing
after a big finish line crash at the tour... 2003 i think? Narstee...

I'd bet the sponsors were instructed to use a particular paint, or
conspiracy theory aside, maybe it was relatively fresh water-based
paint and the light drizzle acted as a solvent. Dollars to donuts
they choose a paint that was guaranteed to be easy to remove.
Unfortunately, I think it was also guaranteed to lower the asphalt's
coefficient of friction to roughly that of a greased pig. Maybe it's
a new way to prevent nasty bunch sprint road rash-itis.

Yeah. I noticed that the first guy to fall was on the back and outer
edge of the sprinter's group. He seems to take an unforced slide,
presumably because he either tried to change lines or braked, and it was
just so slippery.

As soon as that happened, the natural instinct of the rest of the pack
would be to start braking. But they were on a super-slick surface,
apparently, so it was falls galore as they locked up. Riders don't stop
falling until they were far back enough in the pack that when they got
to the line, they were already moving slowly, having braked farther back.

The sprinters wouldn't have braked until after the finish, which
explains their getaway.

Here a light rain will float all the oils up that have been building up on the
road since the last rain. The first rain after a long dry spell makes the roads
frightfully slick. Probably the same thing there, fairly hot mostly dry climate.
Add that streaking paint and it's a bit scary looking.
