Looking at the VeloNews web site link to the Giro and then looking at the
route profile, my eye is drawn to three symbols. Can someone tell me what
the symbols stand for? The first symbol is a blue square with an 'I'. Surely
that doesn't mean 'Information'. Can't quite see the peloton stopping and
asking "Which way do we go from here".
The second symbol is a red circle with an 'R'. Please don't tell me that's a
new UCI mandatory rest stop. And finally there is a yellow downward pointing
triangle with "GPM". Closes thing I can think of is 'General Peloton
Massage'.
Thanks for the help.

I think it works like this: at the intergiro, there are points and bonus
seconds, just like an intermediary sprint at the tour. The points count for
the points classification, and the bonus seconds for the GC. But there is
also the intergiro classification, which is calculated by counting only the
bonus seconds gained at the intergiro, nothing else. -

seconds (6,4,2) and Intergiro bonus seconds (30, 24,18 etc. unless they've
changed it). As you said, the real bonus seconds come off a rider's GC time,
while the Intergiro bonus seconds only count towards that competition. The classifications I think are redundant are the Azzurri d'Italia and Most
combative classifcitions. The former is just based on top 3 in the stage
(like Points), and the latter is a combination of points and mountains, I
think. It's not a judged award like it is in the Tour. The Trofeo Fuga
piaggio is judged on the number of kilometres spent in a breakaway. And then
there are two types of team classifications and the Fair Play. Why? I guess the Italians like podium time.

I thought it also included actual race time to the Intergiro line.yes. it is another GC competition (i think, i'm not even sure).
the intergiro finish line is positioned so that sprinters can win (ie.
before the big climbs), but it is also possible for someone to win if
they get to the line first by being in an early break.so it's a jacky durand competition.
but the cyclingnews reports only show the time for the winner of that
day's intergiro 'stage', so i'm not sure how it's scored. -

Correcting myself here :-)There are Intergiro seconds (30, 24 etc.)
There are real bonus sections (6, 4, 2)
There *are* points that count towards the points jersey (8, 6,4 ,2)
There is 1000 euros cash for first across the line. That pretty much covers everything.

No, of it was, the time gaps in the intergiro classification would be
bigger.Quoted message said:

My understanding on this one is that doing what is essentially a
mid-race "finish line" is there to keep the speed up during the earlier
parts of the stage.A problem that the Giro has traditionally had is with the riders taking
it comparatively slowly for much of a stage (not a lot of breakaways),
and serious racing not happening for much more than the last hour or so.
I suppose mid-stage sprint bonuses are an exception, but apparently
not enough to encourage breakaways that stay away. Thus, the Intergiro classification is intended as another way of
encouraging a faster pace.Smith
