    According to my calculations, 1:20 for 1km is
    about 28mph. I thought that these guys could
    do better than 30mph for such a short distance.
    Was there a headwind or a grade?

    No headwind or grade, but 150 metres more. Lancaster's average speed was
    about 32.2 mi/h.

    No headwind or grade, but 150 metres more. Lancaster's average speed was

    As roadracers, these guys do not train for and most are not built for hard
    launches.

    Robbie McEwen had a headwind. He would have won otherwise.

    Thanks for pointing that out. It bears repeating. When the history of
    this Giro is written, there should be an asterisk or a footnote to that
    effect. Or something.
