girly yesterday. I'm trying to integrate this into my worldview. The
boy is agile, strong, with good stamina and good control over his body.
His siblings are doing martial arts. He wanted to do gymnastics. So
I sent him to his first gymnastics class yesterday.

He was the only person with a penis in the facility.

One of the older girls (she was maybe nine) asked if my son was a "girly
boy". I said it wasn't girly to do gymnastics, that plenty of men do
gymnastics. Hadn't she ever watched the olympics?

Harumph.

So, do I officially not mind that he's "girly" in that he's doing
something that is undeniably girly (olympics aside, there were NO OTHER
boys in there), or do I protest that gymnastics is a manly sport?

IMO every kid should be required to take gymnastics for a couple of
years. No better way to learn how to move and control your body in space.

If you come over protective mother, then he'll get teased. You can make as
much sense as you like explaining things to little kids, as soon as you walk
away the little kid will start the whole 'Mummy's boy' routine. Not a good
idea.

If you just leave alone, then people will get used to your kid doing
gymnastics PDQ. He might still get a bit of stick for it, but probably not
much. Does also depend what the gym class does - if they concentrate on the
rhythmic gymnastics with music end of things, then he might have a problem
(but he also might get bored with that sort of [censored] fairly fast); if they do
proper gymnastics then he'll be fine.

Gymnastics is not as girly as bodybuilding. Also, just like
ballet, gymnastics is only considered girly in the US.

Interesting. I've got seven responses, where three essentially say
"it's manly" and four say "don't mind that it's girly." Oh, and TBR
wants to discuss vibrators.

I think it's pretty clear that being able to move your body with grace
and flexibility is a good trait. I've also managed to convince his
older siblings that lifting weights is a good means to the end in terms
of whatever sport they're choosing to do, so I have faith that I'll be
able to convince a boy he needs to spend time in the weight room if he
wants to do rings routines, for example. So I'm cool with gymnastics
and I think we can brazen it out. He knows he is a boy. He doesn't
care (at this age) if the girls know it.

Speaking of core strength, Mistress Krista has another picture of him -
as my oly bar for bench pressing in the "workouts" tab. (If anyone
doesn't know who Mistress Krista is, get over there and read everything
she ever wrote. It's easier than googling this entire group for good
