A mate has got a Giant MTB for occasional use. Pretty cheap groupset
(SIS), but the frame seems decent enough for a low-end bike. It's heavy,
though.

Since Giant are the biggest bike manufacturer in the world, I'd imagine
quite a lot of people have...

More to the point, they range from very cheap verging on cheerful to
very serious full suspension race machines with 4 figure price tags, and
the two extremes have very little to do with one another. So rather
tricky to answer your question in a meaningful way without a /bit/ more
context!

Generally very good value for money. The XTC hardtails are very nice
although the XTC Composite frameset is surprisingly heavy and not worth
the extra over the 'hybrid'😉. The new Trance series are said to be
exceedingly nice (I've so far only ridden one round a carpark - it was
certainly very nice for that). Only slight questions I have about it are
the number of pivots in the rear suspension, which means more wear and
more servicing costs, and the risk of the 'basket' in which the rear
suspension unit sits clogging with mud and causing accelerated wear on
the unit.

Good bikes, and you get a lot of technology for your money.
