Ghetto headset removers wanted.

In the past I have used a large screwdriver with the end coated in latex
and a hammer. It worked without damage. Now I just bring it to the
LBS. The remove the old one and seat the new one for $10.

Get a piece of pipe (thin wall, preferably) just big enough to barely
fit through the headset cups. Cut a 3" slot down the middle, and
spread the two sides sliightly. Then compress it while inserting into
the headset. It'll expand and catch the opposite side's headset cups
which will pop out nicely with a couple light whacks on the other end
of the "tool".

I use a roll pin punch from Harbor Freight, and a hammer.

I used an old staight mtn bike handlebar cut to about 1 ft long. I cut 4
slits in the side with a dremel-type rotory tool (about 3-4" long). I
bent the 4 tabs out a little, and it worked perfectly.

Similar to the above I've had good luck with a nut driver just small
enough to fit into the headtube. My theory being that there will be a
fair amount of contact along the arc of the nut driver (or socket) to
not scar the headset.

Of course I did this on a 3 year old Ritchey headset not a King
headset.

I second the use of a ratchet extension. Been knocking out races for years
with these. I also have a cylinder made of brass that I machined back in my
ol' driveline/ pto building days that works pretty well too.

Yeah, just a tad bit more of a contact point that way.

Bonus is that as long as it doesn't look like it was used as a center
punch, Sears will replace for free.....gotta love Craftsman!!
(for the record I have never had to replace an extension, just the
ratchet!)
