  1. I swear to God, I think people have gone nuts. Everyday, there is a show on
TV or radio about how America has become too fat. I do demos in grocery
stores in and around Austin, Tx and all people do is eat. Yet, the low carb
method is working for millions of people. I've lost 40 lbs, lowered my
cholesterol and feel good. I see fantastic weight loss reported on this NG
    everyday.

Yet I keep getting comments like these:

"You've lost weight, sure, but what is it doing to you?"
"Atkins is very unhealthy." (guess I need more cookies, cakes and ice cream,
    huh?)
"South Beach is healthier than Atkins."
"I thought you were smarter than that."
    "You'll ruin your health."
    "Don't lose any more."

And on and on and on. What is it, jealousy? What ever happened to support
and encouragement. I'm a 65 year old woman with a genius IQ, since when am I
not allowed to make my own decisions?

The comments I get from people some times are not in the spirit of trying to
help, they are just nasty comments intended to put me down.

I've gotten to the point that I don't hardly mention my weight loss or
eating choices any more. Screw 'em.

  2. People get one idea stuck in their minds and it is very hard to kick it out
amd implant a new one. I am so glad my parents raised me to totally open
    minded.

    IGNORANCE

Ignorance is sometimes the root of evil comments.

They don't "understand", therefore you are somehow bad.

They don't have the correct information, therefore Atkins or Other is
"Unhealthy because you eat all that fat, and if you don't have
carbohydrates, your mind stops working" so you are doomed.

    IGNORANCE

    Real powerful stuff.

    EZ to get, too.

Well, there's your problem. Apparently you expect people do be as smart and
as informed as you. Please remember that most of the people you're listing
to are just ignorant, and many are too damn smart to realize it.

Well, funny thing is no one ever gives me grief on my choices when I tell
them. No one. Perhaps it has to do with how I look. 🙂

    No kidding.

  11. I think it is a good idea not to mention it to most people. There is a
little jealousy, but I feel it is more the fact that they see you doing
something about your weight problem and it makes them feel they are not
doing anything. In other words they may feel lazy. This happens to us all.
Your real friends will support you in what you do. As far as SB or Atkins
goes, I think they both work. I am on neither, I am just eating LC.

Enjoy and stay the course for yourself. Don't worry about what other people
say. When you get to goal and stay there, people will start complementing
you. They just need to get used to you being thin. People don't like
change and don't like to feel like they are doing nothing while you are.

A girl after my own heart. It's nobody's business but yours. I'm
taking a lot of flak because I'm going to a clinic that closely
monitors my weight (3 times a week) and gives me a shot in the ass.
The diet is low-carb and I KNOW I could do it on my own without the
shots if I had any willpower. The fact is, I can make more excuses for
myself than anybody, so I pays the money and I goes every other day.
It's working for me and I'll continute to go until it isn't.

I didn't even tell anybody for the first month because I knew what the
reaction would be - but when they started noticing that I was losing
and started asking what I was doing - I told them. I shoulda just kept
my mouth shut, because apparently this healthy food plan I'm following
is going to be the death of me. The protein, vegetables and fruit will
send me to an early grave. I should be eating bread and cereal for
    gawd's sake!!!

Keep on doin' what you're doin'. And you're right - Screw 'em.

  16. People are stupid. Just look at some of the other things they do, the bad
decisions they make in their lives. They are too lazy to do research and
think for themselves, they believe the propaganda that they are constantly
bombarded with by the news media and a good portion of the medical
    community.

  17. No, Atkins is eating LC, but not all eating LC is Atkins. As certain people
on this group often remind us, if you don't follow Atkins'
program--induction followed by 5 gram increments, you are LCing but you are
    not doing Atkins.

    In news:[email hidden],

  18. You are running into a sociological phenomenon. People believe a lot of
things that are far from true. I suspect that most people will never
consider the possibility that the food they imprinted on in their youth
might be improper. To believe you are right would require them to believe
    they are wrong.

Once one passes the weights of others (on the way down), one is no longer
the person needing help. I miss the great support I got during my first 50
pounds. I still get some support, but it is a tiny fraction of what it used
    to be.

Your feelings, about the people who actively discourage you, are justified.

  19. Hi, Jean,

I am just wondering if negative comments about a diet could be a mix
of jealousy with social flattery. For example, a message such as
"Atkins is very unhealthy" could be easily interpreted (by me) as
"Sure, you look better than I do, but I justify my being fat by
arguing that Low Carb will kill me". A message such as "You've lost
weight, sure, but what is it doing to you?" is another example of
    above interpretation.

A message like "Don't lose any more" is actually double sided. On
the one hand it implies flatter such as "You've succeeded, so you can
stop now", but on the other hand it could mean "Stop, or else you'll
look better than all of us".

For the most part, people who make such comments are themselves
overweight. By putting your lifestyle down, they are justifying
theirs. It's a defense mechanism on their end. And keeping your WOE
private is probably the best way to avoid conflicts.

    Just my 2 cents.

I refuse to accept that in order to do atkins you have to do induction for
two weeks and then find your CCL. If Atkins is a for life WOE, why then
should it be defined by a mere several weeks? By and large, Atkins is about
eating LC to control weight, diabetes, etc. If you follow the plan for life,
you'll end up simply eating a LC life style. You'd have been believe that I
should say that I'm doing Aktins now because several years ago I spent two
weeks doing induction and then incrementing carbs by 5 grams a week.
    Horsepucky.

In here, we tell noobs who are screwing up and blaming their screw ups on
atkins that they didn't get results because they didn't follow the plan.
That's usually true. But to define Atkins in such a narrow way does a
disservice to what Atkins was/is (man/diet plan) all about - controling
    carb intake to benefit health.

IMO, anyone figures out their food intolerances and limits carbs to control
weight and diabetics is effectively doing Atkins. Atkins himself may
disagree, but it's still my opinion 🙂
