  1. My bf is on the diet with me. He wants to loose about 20 pounds. A
couple of times a week he plays soccer. When he gets home he has the
shakes and feels terrible. Normally he would eat some bread or
something like that for quick energy but since thats not allowed he
wanted me to aks you guys what he can do about it? Is there a snack
with quick energy he can have or should he eat prior to playing?

    Zap

  2. sounds as if he is going hypo after the exercise. He should experiement
with eating carbs either just before, during, and even after exercise (or
some combination of those). 40 g or so per hour of exercise should be about
right. After, it is a good idea to mix the carbs with some protein.

Remember, hard exercise means you can eat more carbs and still get the
    benefits of LC.

you might want to google 'targeted ketogenic diet' (TKD). This is a modified
LC diet plan for people who do lots of exercise.

  3. Thank you for the advice but since we are still in the induction fase
i didnt know bananas were allowed. I will check the TKD out.

Zap - Bananas aren't allowed on induction. Also, if you TKD then you are
    not doing atkins.

If you want to get through induction, then it would be best for your bf to
just back off on the exercise to avoid the shakes and feeling badly.
induction is only two weeks, so it should be possible.

if you want to do strict atkins while doing lots of exercise, then it is a
matter of upping carbs to the level that supports the activity that your bf
    engages in.

Or, you can learn the concepts of LC by following Atkins, and then switch
over to a TKD type plan, which is strictly not atkins, but in essense, is
since all you are really doing is timing the extra carbs to coincide with
the execise activity. But TKD type carbs ups are not strickly part of the
    aktins plan.

  5. Hi Zap,

    Peanut butter.

A quick fix for such a thing is eating 2 table spoons of peanut butter.
Each spoon contains about 6 grams of carbs and yet it can
provide a nice sweet taste plus it boosts energy.

In fact, Dr. Atkins video suggests consuming peanut butter
    as a back-up system.

Try to get the peanut butter that does NOT contain Partially Hydrogenated
    Oil,
also known as trans-fat. That's poison to the body cells.

    Good luck

  9. I have had this. Here are my thoughts. He is a bit out of shape I'll bet
and when he plays football he is not in good enough shape to be on LC and
play. He either needs to eat some carbs beforehand or play a little less
intense. I have had this now and again when I started cycling hard. I now
am in good enough shape where it doesn't bother me to be on LC, but I am
    eating more carbs now.

He could just work through it. It is only for two weeks.

6 carbs a Tablespoon? I dont think so! Even the tastiest of Peanut

Butter like creamy Jif is 2.5 carbs per Tablespoon or 5 for a serving
of 2 Tablespoons after substracting the fiber.

Reason #1001 why a strict adherence to Atkins isn't good for active people.

  12. Hi All,

Thanks for the advice. We are doing induction and sticking to it. My
question was if there was anything he could have during this fase
before practise that would help him. He is never quitting soccer and
it will get easier on him when we go to ongoing weightloss monday but
he does have a practice session saturday and if i somehow could spare
him that terrible feeling i would like to do so. Thank you all for
your thoughts, comments and ideas but i think he just has to either
skip that last practice or "suffer" the consequenses".
I just think its weird since atkins clearly states that exercsise is
non-negotiable that there isnt a solution to the people who works out
a bit harder than the rest of us. Oh well.. lifes a [censored] and then you
    do Atkins *g*

  13. Believe me, if he eats a few extra carbs when he is exercising strenuously,
he will not impair his progress at all. He will stay in ketosis and all
will be well. You can successfully low carb without ever doing strict
induction. As I understand the theory there are two reasons for induction,
one is to get one quickly into ketosis, the other is to break cravings. If
he does not have a problem with cravings there is no reason not to give his
body the carbs necessary for it to function.

    Yeah...eat carbs.

Not that any one missed practice is a problem, but in general,
avoiding exercise is the *last* thing he wants to be doing.

Since he's only got about 20# to lose and is active, this could very
well continue to be an issue for him at levels below 60-125g
    carbs/day.

Or it may not, some people seem to be able to adapt to an extent.

    Quoted message said:

Atkins was mostly speaking in the context of incorporating
low/moderate exercise, like maybe 20-45 min of brisk walking or such
    3-5 times a week.

    Quoted message said:

Been there, done that. Sure there is -- Roger (?) posted one
potential solution. TKD or CKD. It can be dammed hard to strictly
adhere to very low carb levels all the time and not have performance
levels and favorable body composition suffer when there's not a lot of
    bodyfat to lose.

Another alternative is for your BF to just eat properly -- i.e.
practice maintenance. He's only got 20# to lose and is not sedentary.
That would basically just involve (1) management of glycemic load with
a moderate carb diet (likely 80 to 125g) -- spread those carbs out and
make better carb choices, (2) portion control -- which is usually a
lot easier to do just by adhering to #1, (3) make sure protein intake
is adequate (about 0.8g protein per pound of bodyweight), (4) Keep
exercising -- stay active, (5) EFA supplementation can also assist.

I understand and salute your BFs desire and fortitude in strictly
following induction, but his needs may not be the same as yours at
    this point.
