AOL! I've got to rent a van to move some furniture and china from Norf
Lunnun to the Cambs/Suffolk border, so could do a delivery on the unloaded
leg.

answer as their rates are surprisingly low.

Yup. As far as my local postie is concerned, if he can get it in the back
of the postbus (and get the doors shut) he'll take it. Once it's in the
system it will get delivered. I suspect those of us who live in rural
areas and have good relationships with our local posties are at an
advantage here.

mainland at one rate, with overnight parcel delivery but has a 72 hour
delivery time and apparently higher rate for the Scottish Highlands?

Have the Highlands moved since I was there in the 1970's? I am sure
that they were attached to the rest of the island when I was there.

Only the bits south of the Great Glen, everything north of that is a
separate island (by some definition of being able to sail around it). I
did once have a company in southampton try to tell me that Dundee was
in the Highlands. I did point out that Dundee is no higher above sea
level than the Isle of Wight.

Because they're unable to rewrite the Parcelforce terms and conditions
properly. I imagine they are also unable to do next day deliveries to
Lindisfarne, which is more or less the UK mainland (and I imagine that means
Great Britain anyway), and somewhere I relatively often send parcels to,
with the line of work I'm currently in.

They're just 400 million years out of date. Which is also why some people
think Dundee is in the Highlands, because then it was a different continent,
and Dundee was on it. Along with a fair chunk of north east Canada.

Lindisfarne is in the Highlands now? Boy, I am glad I didn't go north
the last time I was in the UK , things have definately changed since
the 70's. I'd have been totally lost.

Well, no. Parcelforce have a handy little A4 sheet detailing all the
postcodes with exceptions to normal delivery times and prices.

I suspect that part of it is also due to rural posties not getting moved
from round to round quite so much. Also, given that rural rounds are in
general more complicated than urban rounds, if someone's off you need to
find someone who knows $ROUND ... Which will tend to be one of the other
rural posties ...

Of course though, the Southampton company would have wanted extra to deliver
to IW even though we're just across the Solent. That's if they deliver to
us - and a lot of companies won't!!!
