Can't speak for many others but I commute most days on my SWB recumbent and
have ridden with my wife around Australia on my LoGo trike
(http://www.logotrikes.com), and we are planning another tour somewhere.

We also have a fairly busy bent club here in WA who ride most weekends.
http://www.wahpv.org/ tells all.

I guess if you ride a bent you take notice of others, if your not, then you
probably don't care.

I think its mostly the relative numbers, minor factor of LWBs and trikes being unweildy around obstacles.
Bents surely standout more than SSs and fixies.

Nope, quite the opposite. I notice anything that's not a car and a 'bent
would definately stand out to me. Actually I remember chatting to a
chick on a Flying Furniture(?) machine on ATB two years ago. I think
one passed me on ATB last year as well..

I doubt it would be any faster than other "lowracer" recumbents. I'd be worried that the frame would get you in the neck in a prang.

One of the guys I ride with fairly regularly occasionally rides a SWB recumbent bike (http://www.m5-ligfietsen.com/main.php?sNewPage=City_Cruiser I think), which is very fast on the flat and down-hill. I also know three people who have Greenspeed trikes, one of whom rides his regularly.

I remember a carbon lowracer (http://www.m5-ligfietsen.com/main.php?sNewPage=Low_Racer_Carbon) from this years AAC, which looked lightning fast even standing still.

But having said that, they're still pretty unusual.

Anywhere I would ride my other (road) bike. Mostly on multilane
roads, they're faster, more direct, and have fewer intersections and
parked cars.

I tend to avoid riding it in the rain because getting pelted in the
face with water isn't very much fun, though this hasn't been a great

I bought a secondhand frame for about $800 and scrounged various parts
for it.

Flying Furniture has locally made bikes from about $2000, and sells
frames and parts, too. The web site
<http://www.flyingfurniture.com.au/> is a bit out of date, last time I
looked the latest frame designs weren't shown.

I commute and tour on a recumbent. There are about 10 or so riders I
see regularly around Sydney, and I hear quite a few in Melbourne.

I have a nice custom Kotzur SWB for sale if your interested..

The cheapest way to get a recumbent is find a second hand, though much
derrided, BikeE from the US - About $700 should get you a good one.
have a google.

We're out and about - just there isn't too many of us.

I've seen a few (and had a go on one) at the Hawthorn velodrome.
There's a school somewhere where, every now and then, they get a
recumbent urge. Year 10 or 11 or so project. Design and build your own
recumbent. A few weeks ago they were whizzing round with a
carbon-fibre body. Very noisy. But good.

Berwick Secondary College is big on recumbents, as are some others in
the same area. I believe a Berwick team holds the Australian schools
speed record. They do regular Sunday morning training on bents around
the Pakenham shire offices.

Could you then make a tandem with independent 2WD? With the stoker facing the rear?

Long chains aren't so bad.
They wear three times slower than a normal one.

Steering on a FWD is limited as is gearing as you can't generally use multiple chainrings.

Back to back tandems have been done.
