Schweiz? ... Och Schweiz sabbar ju också dina teser om att olika folkslag inte skulle kunna leva i
fred med varandra. Få länder har så lång tradition av fred som Schweiz, och landet bebos av minst
tre olika språkgrupper, varav endast en är germansk.

there are definitely packages to Austria, as our out-laws went last year to Alpbach in Alpbachtal
(Tyrol). I'll try and find out who they went with, but I seem to remember most packages were coach
rather than plane

If you fly to Innsbruck (expensive) or Munich (cheaper), you can easily get to the Tyrol by train or
bus, and then a taxi up the appropraite valley.

The Zell valley offers quite a lot - paragliding, white water rafting (better on the Inn) ,flat
valley for easy walks/cycling, cable cars open in summer for access to high mountains, Hintertux
used to offer access to snow/ice 365 days a year. There are 2 or three 'activity' swimming pools in
the valley, and access up and down the valley is easy by narrow gauge railway (diesel and steam).

There are old silvermines at the end of the valley, Innsbruck is an easy journey by bus or train.
You can get to Achensee by train/rack&pinion rly for boating and paragliding

I've stayed (several times !!) at Camping Hofer -

campinghofer.atcampinghofer.atOpen ↗ (the english translation doesn't seem to be working at the moment, but
if you ring, both Mintz & Sylvie speak very good english). They also do Bed and breakfast, as does
mintz's brother in law at Gasthof Geisler - we stayed there for the millenium, had a top floor room,
looking out across a snow covered valley with the steam train toot-tooting up and down.....

I want to go back !

A great enthusiasm from this very summer for the area around Schladming, that is western Styria.
Not so many people as in Tyrol, an incredibly beautiful path with small lakes playing with the
mountain ridge south of Schladming. I very strongly recommend the few miles of Weitwanderweg 02 a
bit further east, say between Preintaler Hütte and Sankt Nikolai im Sölktal ; very few souls on the
path proper (though many more were to meet in the valleys), and really impressive medium-height
peaks (around 2700 m).

I had little time to see Schladming proper, but it seems quite a nice place to stay with a family -a
not too big ski resort where ski tracks are not too aggressively in sight.

Still further east in Styria, I met fine places too, but less commendable for a family I think ;
Tyrol is impressive like everything in the Alps of course, but no such enthusiasm -probably a bit
too crowded. Very strong impressions of Lechtaler Alpen near Landeck though.

Nope, it's an irrelevant ramble about different languages and peoples with no mention of Germany
or Austria.

Fantastic walking country in the Tirol - for example around Innsbruck. And many areas in Germany:
Schwarzwald, Neckartal, to name but two out of several (most of whose names escape me).

The big drawback is camping. Wild camping is not approved of in Germany, and official campsites are
the worst I've encountered anywhere, in terms of packing you in sardine-fashion. Stick to the
guesthouses - or even hotels - where you'll get much better value than in the UK.

I'm sure companies like Ramblers Holidays, Waymark, HF etc. do package holidays to Austria and
possibly Germany. They will include an organised programme of walks as well, which might not be what
you had in mind.

Otherwise, a good travel agent should have "Lakes and Mountains" brochures from some of the major
tour operators that you'd more normally think of for lying-on-a-beach type holidays. I've certainly
seen ones which go to the popular region around Salzburg, though I've never been there myself and it
might not be the best area.

I've been to Germany around a dozen times on holiday. In all parts I've always had a really good
time. With the family, one of the best holidays I had there was staying at a Gran Dorado resort.
This gives you basically a house on a car free estate with a central entertainments centre (like
Centre Parcs). The house was superb. We stayed in Hochsauerland, which is a German wintersports area
in central to northern Germany. Weather was superb in August and price was around £600 for a week
including ferry. We found lots to do using the hills around and other entertainments like
tobogganing on summer tracks. The boys thought it the best holiday ever. You can book direct with
Gran Dorado or through Perfect Places (which is what we did).

Bavaria is great and very relaxed. The SW too (Black Forest).

If you like wine / beautiful fairytale villages try along the Mosel River somewhere (Trier, Koblez
etc are beautiful).

For a fairy tale castle it has to be Neuschwanstein near Füssen (on the Austrian border). A lovely
walk up the hill to the castle then you can take the horse and carriage down - the opposite to most
people, but better for the knees. This is in Bavaria, so the local language can confuse (Bayerisch
rather than German, but German will suffice - as will English in many places).

Normally, I go on spec and ask tourist information offices to book me B&B in a small village. Never
stayed at a bad one and you get to meet people easily that way.

The rule for Germans is basically the opposite of England - the further south you go, the friendlier
the people (I can say that being from West Saxon stock, born in Middle Saxon lands and now living in
South Saxon lands). Nowhere do you get the SE England hostility for no good reason though.

And all I have to look forward to is a trip to bloody Sheffield next week...

about the place when I visited her. She says that when she's finished her training in London and
wants to drop out of the rat race, she'd like to work there.

Last time I bought a new car I decided to take myself for a drive.

I headed over the Woodhead pass, intending to do a circuit, but I accidentally arrived in Sheffield.
The roads were in chaos due to work on the new tram routes, and it was murder getting myself
disentangled and safely back into Lancashire....
