Agreed. I can't wait to read Chris C's spin. It could be the shift in
rhythm and the cold weather, but for all of the Discoverers to be left
behind was not expected. Bravo to T-Mobile and Valverd's team. The high
mountains could be a different story but it does look like it will be
interesting.

I am betting on "Lance looked down and realized that he was riding on a slow
leak all day in his rear tire. He didn't want to stop to change it fearing
that T Mobile would attack."

You're close. Carmichael is about to announce that all but Armstrong were
riding on defective Hutchinson tubulars that developed leaks on the final
climb. When the team mechanics replaced the wheels several of the riders
had rubbing brakes that prevented them from getting back up to Armstrong.

Raymond Poulidor, who suffered through most of his career with flatting
Hutchinson tubulars at Mercier, warned Discovery to switch but Armstrong
would not hear of it.

I actually had that problem after a wheel change in a certain NRC crit that
shall remain unnamed. Couldn't understand why I suddenly could barely hang
on to the back of the pack, and thought it was tired legs from that long run
to the wheel pit. When I noticed the brake pad rubbing I was embarrassed to
tell anyone about it because it sounded so lame...

Maybe even worse is not knowing a tire is flat -- it should be
obvious. I guess that's not embarrassing in that the problem is
visible, but I felt like a dumbass anyway after a local race where I
was really struggling for about 10 miles, then flew out the back.
When I stopped I noticed my rear tire had only about 40psi in it....
