I am curious as to the going rate in various geographic areas. (Recently a CMT posted the need to increase her rates and it got me curious about rates.)
As most of the regulars here know, I am a client not a CMT (so I know various people's rates!). I am in Michigan, near Ann Arbor, and have been charged anywhere from $45 per hour to $65 per hour with $45 being a common rate for CMTs who work out of their homes and $60 being the most common rate for CMTs who work out of commercial real estate space. The rates also tend to be a bit higher as you get closer to the nicer suburbs of Detroit (yes, there are nice suburbs).
So, what do you charge? Where are you? And, what do you believe is the going rate where you are?

I live in PA, not in a large city either. Going rate here is anywhere from $40.00 to $60.00 for an hour massage. Average is $50.00 for sure.
I'm located in one of the "nice suburbs" of Detroit, like George mentioned. West Bloomfield, Michigan to be exact. I charge $60 a hour, but that is low end in West Bloomfield. The average rate around me is $70 an hour. Less then two years ago, I worked at a spa less then a 1/2 mile from my current office/studio, and they charged $90 an hour when I worked there. Rent is high in my area, but I'm happy to set a rate which makes massage affordable to just about any one. I don't plan on an increase till 2005.
I left the spa that charged $90 because I didn't feel right passing my cards and saying I charged $90 an hour.....it was a ridiculous rate. I was getting a 50/50 split there, which works out to be $45 a massage, but your retention rate at a place like that is low (it was about 10%, no joking).....you always have new clients. A therapist can't do their best work when all you get is new people...(gift certificates, parties, spa days out, etc). When a chance opened up to get my own studio, I was gone in a flash. My retention rate at the studio is in the 75% range.
I'm in Washington (Northwest) and I'm a massage therapy student who has had a lot of massage. I have paid between $40 and $75 per hour depending on whether it is Relaxation or deep tissue.

That would be tough to keep clients at $90 per hour...when I left California, some therapists were raising their rates to about $70 per hour (from $60)...West Bloomfield is a nice area, but I cannot imagine business costs being higher there than in the San Francisco Bay Area. One other downside (besides turnover and percent of your time you're actually booked) is that if the rate is way out of line, you get people who think that it is due to providing "extras". Now, if you're working on a cruise ship or in a major vacation destination, you probably could sustain a rate like $90...where people are in a "splurging" mindset and you wouldn't normally get a lot of repeat business anyway.

Interesting...I have seen different pricing for different types of massage and to me it does make sense based on how much work it is for the therapist. However, what I've noticed in actual practice is that the people who do charge more for deep work have never (never, as in having received over 500 massages and it hasn't been true even once in my experience) been better than those who don't...in fact, it seems that the opposite is true. (Maybe those who are good at deep tissue massage LIKE giving deep tissue massage and don't consider it extra work????)

There are always the very pricey spas.... I live somewhat close to The Spa at the Hotel Hershey where a 50 minute massage cost $90.00 and if you want deep tissue, it is $115.00 for 60 minutes. Trust me, no one else around here is charging that. At those prices, its not wonder they don't get return clients. That is a place you go for special occasions. I imagine that is the same scenario as the spa you worked at.
Great subject...I, too, am a massage studet (for another 6 days -yippeee!!) According to the market research we did in our practice management course, avg around here (Long Island, NY) ranges from about $65 at the low/average end on up to around $85-90 for an hour tx. More for in home. One gentleman we found gets $200/hour for thai massage in-office! We were advised not to start our price schedule below the $65 mark, but that as beginners we should aim between $65-75/hour, depending on our type of practice. Here's another related question that seems to be sparking debate around here: In NY, LMTs are considered health care practitioners. With this in mind, should we accept tips (when was the last time you tipped a Dr.)
