Not everyone's cup of tea (or price range), but I have a Thorn Sherpa,
and I'm extremely happy with it.

Mine has drops, but various flat bar configurations are available.

Ebay's rarely the source of cheap Galaxie, Super or otherwise.

Beg to differ, got my Super Galaxy this year for just over £250
because person had produced [censored] listing, not even mentioned had TA
chainset..... just have to watch out for poorly design listings.

A good used Super Galaxy is going to be far superior quality than
current new models, just look at the difference in the frame tubing.

Not completely because it's wouldn't be difficult to convert a Galaxy to
flat bars. Selling the original bars, stem, levers and shifters would
help pay for the conversion.

A good used Super Galaxy is going to be far superior quality than

And how knowledgeable does one have to be do determine the provenance and
quality of the Super Galaxy?

Extremely so, obviously.....

Ride a new Galaxy, and one from late 90's, which was UK hand built and
manufactured, and you will feel the difference straight away.

Poor listings (eg no detailed pictures) for Galaxies and other touring
bikes regularly appear.

I know the owner of a Thorn tourer which is flat barred, and she
claims to be very happy with it. Looks like a nice bit of kit to
me, and it's been well used.

Which supports my assertion - you are one of the rare bidders who's got
value for money through the ineptitude of a lister. Had the goods been
accurately listed then you'd have paid considerably more.

You may possibly be interested in my 535L Sherpa up for sale in the St
John Street Cycles forum for £325. Under two years old, less than
2,000mi on the clock, it is flat bar and 26". More details in the
SJSC forum or I can email more info and pics.

If you can't find second hand, any of the bike builders who put
together touring bikes should be able to do you a straight bar version.
Names that spring to mind, Paul Hewitt, Bob Jackson and one that
advertises straight bar tourers Byer Cycles

Alternativly buy a touring frame and either build it up yourself or get
