  1. I am currently running a compact crank ( 50 x 34 ) with a 12-25 cassette. I would like to run my 53 x 39 with a 12 - 27 cassette.

My question is will I get the best of both worlds with the standard crank and the 12 - 27 setup.

I seem to run out of gears when I am on the flats but I love the compact in the hills!!

    Please help!!

    Bob

  2. 53 x 39 with a 12-25 should do the trick for you. But if you live in area where the hills are super steep, then a 12-27 may be the best bet for you. 12-25 is a pretty excellent all around cassette for most types of terrain. 😉

    Bob,

this is why I run a triple, 36/42/53... 12-23 on the try bike. 😄

  4. Changing cranks is a pain. Why not invest in an 11-23 cassette and run it with your compact crank? You get a better top end (4.54:1 vs. 4.42:1) and you retain some low climbing gears.

  5. You say that you're cranking a 50/12 (112 gear inch) gear on the flats and spinning out?

Are you surprised? That's less than 33 mph at 100 RPM.

Of course, any beginner easily spins out of such a low gearing.

    🙄

Seriously, I think anyone that thinks they're spinning out of that gear on a flat is probably on a false flat heading down, a masher or both... not that there's anything wrong with that.

It may have been down hill because nothing is truly flat, then again.......I am a masher so who knows. I ride for fun. I just like to ride. I dont wear team jersey's but I would if I bought one so.....sorry for the rant.

So back to the gearing question......

I think I will try the 11-23 route thanks for the suggestion!!

I thought TT/Tri bikes ran mainly on flattish roads, and therefore didn't need low gearing...

Yes, thats why I took the 30 tooth off the inner and fitted a 36.

I find the 42 middle ideal for tri, but a 39 would be better for training, so, rather than have a rarely used 30 t inner, I found my largest availalbe inner is a 36, so I have the best of both worlds, a good racing gear 42, and a good training and conversational gear, a 36. 😎
