A little known secret is the Millets and Blacks are owned by the same
company so if you see something you fancy in one of the two shops and is
cheaper in the other, you can always let them know. They tend to reduce the
price for you then.

Wouldn't call it 'gear snob'. I bought a very useful lightweight
waterproof/breathable jacket for 30 quid from Millets. Excellent on those
uncertain summer days, use it on the South Downs and in the Lakes. Nice and
light to carry. Also own and wear brilliant long sleeve thermal base-layers
with zip-neck and high collar ...... 12 quid from ASDA George range (under
the ski section). Short sleeve ones are about a tenner.

If it does the job and at the price, who cares about a fancy brand logo.

Couldn't agree more. My P. Storm has done me proud for two years, and
(being somewhat clumsy), each time I snag, or nearly snag, it on bush or
barbed wire I am comforted by the thought of a cheap replacement.

Are they out there this weekend?

They may have been blown away.. Had great difficulty staying in
contact with Carn Gorm (Lyon/Rannoch) today....... Wild and
wonderful.

Funny bit was the person I annoyed at the top. He asked if this was
the way down, and I replied that I did not know... I had come up from
Loch Rannoch and he was convinced that I was heading the wrong way.

I was just trying to stay on the ground.

I had an accident in my rather expensive Berghaus Gortex jacket and
ruined it, as a stop gap I bought a cheap Regatta X-ert one. It uses
something called Isotex rather than Gortex and has all the things you'd
expect to find on more expensive jackets. This was a number of years ago
and I think I paid about £80 rather than the £400 it would have cost me
to replace the Berghaus. I wasn't expecting much but was very surprised
by its performance.

Worn over a fleece it has kept me warm and dry during winter walks in
the Lakes and Debyshire hills and worn without a fleece is great in
spring and autumn.

Five years on it is still waterproof, if a little battered, and I doubt
my expensive jacket would have held up any better.

My £10 Regatta overtrousers are still going well after several years use
(cycling to work mostly). What makes me pay more for a jacket are things
like hood design which I've never liked on the cheap jackets I've looked at
(though very often not on expensive ones either it has to be said).

I have a Cag (from Millets) which disappears into its own chest pocket
when not being worn. It is allegedly waterproof and breathable AND
windproof. The chest pocket is an excellent map pocket as well.

It performs every bit as well as my Buffalo shirt (Pertex - not pile
lined)

And Millets give 10% discount if you happen to be a member of an
organisation which is on their "list" e.g.RSPB.
