  1. Wow the gas price could make over $3 per gallon in next few monthss. it
scares he hell out of the drivers. For biker rider, does not matter. It
does not matter in Europen. In dutch, they don't care about how high
gas price goes because most of dutches are transporting with bikes.
Believe or not, high gas price is good for US government because it
    creating the high tax revenue.
And those energy oligarchy also get high share for high gas
price. They dictate the price that American people can't.
Car addicted American people have to keep pump in those high
gas price and not happy about it? What could they do?
Is there any where they can dictate the price? Yes there is the
way if they somehow stop driving their big fat car. Sadly
it never going to happen since AMerican people must stick
with fat-SUV. It's the way their life stick with gasoline
and how could not driving it. This is getting worst.
Car defines what Americans are. Bike is just for few fun, not
a serious transportation device. How many Americans use bike on
    their work? Less than 1%.

Seems spelling mistakes at least are not confined to this side of the pond,
Ken. "Grammer"??? Change the 'e' to an 'a' and you'll be correct. Unless of
course, you were referring to the actor taking the lead role in that fine
    Leftpondian comedy, "Frasier" ;-)

I recently had the following conversation:

Person: Gas prices are too high
Me: What are you going to do about it?
Person: I can't do anything about it.
    Me: Sure you can
    Person: What can I do?
    Me: Stop Driving
    Person: Huh?
    Me: Quit Driving
    Person: WTF?
Me: The profit on $0 in sales is $0, you quit driving
they will lower the price to sucker you back in.
Person: I can't do that, even if I was going around the block I would
    drive!
Me: Then quit complaining about gas prices.

  9. Funny thing - when people FREAK out when gas goes up, they forget how
the extra few bucks/week is miniscule when it comes to the OVERALL cost
of owning a car. Think about it - they're getting upset about the one
expenditure they can't control: fuel cost.

Most people refuse to take ownership of the costs they CAN control:
driving habits, insurance costs, preventive maintenance, crankin' the
AC, those stupid 3000-mile oil change recommendations, and of course
the purchase price and fuel economy of the vehicle they bought.

If car buyers thought holistically over the life of the vehicle, fuel
cost would be a much smaller factor.

Heck, this is just the beginning. Wait until it gets cold and the home
heating season starts... $65/barrel oil will seem like a deal. What I
really like is the news articles that repeatedly remind us that it was
more expensive (for about 30 days) back in the 70's, then they segue
    into "hydrogen is coming".

    Pigs will fly soon.

Hydrogen creates it's own issues, that people seem to always forget.

Hydrogen is an energy store, it's not an energy provider. In order to
get usable hydrogen for fuel, you need to get it from somewhere, most
common source is water, most common method is electrolysis, by running a
current through water, you can break the molecular bond and get hydrogen
and oxygen, but then where do you get the electricity from, either you
burn oil or coal or uranium. You can also get hydrogen from
hydrocarbons (oil or gas), but that also creates some form of pollution.

Even if you could replace gasoline with hydrogen today, that doesn't
deal with the almost constant gridlock in major cities.

Somehow our newpapers tend gloss over the inconvenient details. It will
be interesting to see how our capital markets react when the MBA types
start plugging $100/barrels into spreadsheets. Where I live they are
still building parking garages everywhere to facilitate shopping.

This point is usually overlooked by most people, and by the media, probably
because they don't understand the law of conservation of energy.

During California's electricity crisis, a few years back, I understand that
part of the problem was a shortage of electrical transmission capacity. The
wind farms could not be used to good effect because of a shortage of
transmission capacity. If the electricity generated by wind power and solar
sources could be used to create hydrogen, the hydrogen could then be
distributed by tanker trucks, just as gasoline is now.

Even electric cars are not really pollution free, because they rely on
electric power, which traces back to fossil-fuel-burning steam generation.

  18. Well, it's kind of funny because I was just watching the FOX cable news
channel, and they stated that in order for gas to be as expensive,
figuring for inflation, as it was back in the crisis of the 70's oil
would have to hit $90 a barrel.

How true that is I do not know, perhaps we need an inflation
    calculator.

be interesting to see how our capital markets react when the MBA types
start plugging $100/barrels into spreadsheets. Where I live they are
still building parking garages everywhere to facilitate shopping.

Well, that's actually quite simple, if $60/barrel results in $3 Gallon,
then $100/Barrel should be $5/Gallon. However there are always
psychological barriers. There are price points where you will simply
not buy unless you are running on fumes, and then you buy enough to go a
day or two, hoping the price drops. There are other points, where you
will pray those fumes hold out. The gas companies know this, and they
use the highest prices to offer discounts, gee the price this morning
was $2.95 and now it's $2.75 better fill up, before it goes back up.
Thing is next week, $2.95 will be the lower price....

Wanna see cheaper gas prices, take transit one day a week, bike another
day, leave the car at home those days. If gasoline consumption dropped
30 - 40%% the oil companies would drop the prices, profits on $0 in
sales are $0, no matter how you look at it.

    W

  20. That's hard to figure since inflation is a recursive variable. The next
index will imbed the new oil price levels thus deflating dollar value,
etc... The thing I remember is the economy went to [censored] for a long time
about then. I read an AP report this week that said the Saudi's are
repatriating $360 billion dollars. Maybe their economist could explain
    it...
