I just saw this message in r.b.t. and thought it may be of interest to those lurking on r.b.r., since many of us have done business w/ Gary over the years.

had passed away earlier in the month of leukemia. Purchased a couple things from him over the years. He was always patient with my questions and straightforward with his answers. He'll be missed."
I personally had one transaction w/ Gary, and found him to be a great guy to deal with. He'll be missed.
I also purchased a frame from him many years ago, and spoke with him several times. I remember poring over his flyers, always looking for a killer deal, before there he or I was on the web. Too bad, r.i.p. Gary.
Wow - I'm really sad. What a great help Gary was when I went to drop my first K on a bike (that would be a bargain now!). He was patient, honest...terrific guy. Gary once owned a shoe store on Howard Street in Baltimore. He opened his first "bike shop" in Oregon i believe. Thanks for the heads up Scott.

Please note that his business will apparently open up again. I don't know who will be running it but I hope that they keep the spirit of Gary because he was a good man to do business with.
Gary was a cool guy. I bought a steel Merckx from him in 2001 just before I got married. I wanted tubular Mavic Reflex rims with my Chorus hubs, but Gary was out and wanted to deliver my bike.
So what did he do? He gave me a pair of Mavic SSC Paris Roubaix rims instead of the Relfex and delivered my bike. A pair of those rims can easily get somebody $350.00 even in 2001. Didn't know him, but I do know a few, not many, like him. When it comes to a really good shop, it seems to me, that people don't really appreciate it until it's gone. I make it a point to go out of my way, any time the buying decision is even vaguely close, to support the good people that I know in the business. One of my friends is finally getting the chance to run his own shop, and will be opening up in a week or so. When he left the local shop where we had bought several bikes and done a ton of business we basically stopped buying there. It wasn't that they aren't a solid shop, they are, it's was just that what made it special disappeared. After a couple of months when we did go in it was hard to find anybody that we knew working there and the relationship was gone. Can't wait for the new shop to open. Got to support the good people in this business whenever you can. Bill C
