Garmin Way Points (GPS) ?

I believe that Adventure Cycling has just completed Garmin waypoints for their Trancontinental
rides. Some 31,000 IIRC.

I use a Garmin GPS Legend on my bike. It's a little larger than a pack of cigarettes and garmin make
a keen snap in holder for a bike. It's great for exploring unknow areas and being sure you can find
your way back with the "track back" procedure. But I don't know of any custom way points or
pre-recorded tracks. You can record and save your own on a PC though. But you probably know all
that.....already.

I use a Garmin eMap while riding but not for custom waypoints, its usually just to keep records of
the ride, average speed etc. I don't know of any mapped rides but with the software it shouldn't be
that hard to do

I use a Garmin Vista to find the car back. If I had to do over again, I'd spend a little more and by
a navigation model instead of a mapping model. They are a nice add on for bikers.

I didn't answer your question, but anythign information can be added before your trip via your
computer and a cable. I only turn my unit on when it's time to find the car. I just need to know the
general direction where I parked.

I'm waiting for this Garmin Model to come out 4th quarter.

This looks just the right size for cycling.

I saw some type of Sport Garmin at the Hotter Than Hell ride this August. It was Way Cool. You can
download your whole ride to maps.

Jerry - I alternate between a Garmin eMap and eTrex Summit (both use the same handlebar mount) on my OSS bent. Although either will get one back to the car, the eMap is really nice for figuring out where the heck you are, or how to get to someplace specific from whereever you are.

Just for giggles, I put an IBM Thinkpad, external powered speakers, Delorme USB Earthmate and 12 volt deep cycle boat battery in my Burley Nomad trailer, and towed it around for a day... Not very practical, and I ended up getting paranoid thinking that someone would hear it telling me when to turn, and think that I had a kid locked up in the traler with "with all the windows closed", and turn me in. I was still trying to decide whether to tell them that the kid was shy, ugly or an albino, when the battery finally gave out.

Like you, I've also looked and haven't found any precompiled Garmin waypoint lists for bike routes, so I ususlly end up "wandering", and never save anything.

I just completed my first ride, the MS 150, with my new Garmin eTrex Legend. As mentioned above,
it's fairly small, about the size of a cell phone and only 5 or 6 oz. With the handlebar mount, it
fit onto my VRex just fine. I downloaded the maps for the area east of Atlanta where the ride was
going to be and knew exactly where we were the whole time. It also had speed, distance, time moving,
time stopped etc. I haven't uploaded the route to my PC yet, but will do that soon and can see the
route in Street Atlas. I love this gadget. It was about $165 from Amazon.

Many of us use GPS on our bike rides I use a Garmin eMap. We draw our own routes from maps using the
Garmin Mapsource software. I also create my own routes then go out an ride them. You can create
routes from any bicycle club cue sheet too. Some bike club web pages have downloadable maps in
Street Atlas format. If you own Delorme Street Atlas you can download these to your Garmin GPS. If
you live in the Boston, Massachsetts area the Charles River Wheelmen Web page has some of the rides
in Street Atlas format. The web page is www.crw.org
