  1. Hi All

I have the above (ageing!) GPS and I know one or two others here also use
this model, so I wonder if I could ask the following advice:

I have only recently started to 'use' the GPS in anger as it were but have
noticed one or two possible short comings? After planning a route in MM and
loading it onto the GPS, I've noticed it only allows a maximum of 30
waypoints to be displayed (20 routes each consisting of 30 waypoints). All
well and good but what happens if my planned route contains more than 30
waypoints? I have realised that after waypoint 30 I can use the 'GOTO'
function to waypoint 31 for example, but this has to be done for every
waypoint after number 30. I suppose I could split the route into two
separate routes and store them as Route 1 and Route 2 and follow it that
way, but is there an easier way of doing this that I haven't quite grasped?
Also, when out and about and having made the route 'active' in order to
follow it, when I get back home to upload the actual route taken on the day,
in order to compare it to the 'planned' route, I don't seem to be able to
find it. Does the GPS 12 allow me to follow an 'active' route and plot the
actual route taken at the same time (if you get my drift!)?

    I don't think so.

Regardless of following a route on not the GPS12 (and many others) will
record the track of where it has been if it is setup to do so. Therefore
try downloadin the Track to MM (I don't know if MM call it the track or
    something else).

If there is nothing you may have tracking turned off on the GPS. Go to
the map page and move across to the OPT menu, select it and then Track
Setup. If you set Record to Wrap and Method to Auto that should suit in
    most cases.

No, that's the way to do it. You are limited to 30 waypoints per
route. But with 20 routes that should be plenty to split longer
    routes.

To record the actual route taken you want to record a track. The
options for this are found on the map page:

    Opt > Track Setup >

    IIRC the choices are

    Record: Fill/Off/Wrap
    Method: Auto/Time Interval

In Wrap it fills the memory and then overwrites the oldest points. I
have mine set to fill and time interval at 40 seconds which means that
I can generally forget about the track log on even the longest walks.
Setting it to fill means I don't lose the start of the walk when it is
full and at an interval of 40 seconds per point 1024 points will last
    me more than eleven hours.

When you get back you download this track to your PC. I use Ozi so I
can't say exactly where the command is in MM, but it's likely to be
    GPS > Download Track.

    Hi Dominic

Thanks for your reply. I checked the tracking settings and found it was
indeed set to 'off'. It had been set to Wrap and Auto but I think it must
have reverted back to its default settings somehow because all the other
settings, map datum's etc., had also reverted back to the defaults. I always
leave rechargeable batteries in the unit and I don't think they went flat so
don't know why it reverted back to the defaults etc.

Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated. I'll master this GPS yet :o)

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for your reply. As explained in my reply to Dominic, my settings had
reverted back to the default settings somehow. However, I also intend using
the GPS for cycling and I was wondering whether I would have to alter any
settings on the GPS for this. Reading your reply I think this may be the
Auto/Time Interval settings? I have just checked the track setup again and
found the Time Interval is set to 30 seconds. A setting of 40 seconds would,
as you say, give around 11.37 hours. The default settings are Wrap/Auto and,
as Dominic stated, these would probably be ok in most circumstances.

However, taking into account that I will be using the GPS for both walking
and cycling, I would imagine the setting of 30 or 40 seconds would be too
often bearing in mind the higher travelling speeds involved when cycling?
Does anyone have any recommendations as to what settings would be best for
each? I wouldn't want to lose any part of the walk so I suppose the 'Fill'
option would be better but then if its a long walk/ride I'd miss the end?
Mind you, 11 hours should be plenty but this would obviously reduce if I
increased the time interval for cycling. So, I would imagine having the
method set to 'Time Interval' may be the better option?

Thanks again for your advice. Much appreciated. :o)

Actually, the faster you travel the more often you want time based
    track points.

I think in view of your mixed use it would be best to stick to Fill
and Auto. The thing is with track points based a fixed time interval
you will lose detail. You will possibly change direction in between
points and lose that corner. When walking it doesn't matter too much
as important things like summits are places you tend to stop at for
more than the time difference between one point and the next. If you
are on the bike you can go a hell of a way in 30 or 40 seconds.

The automatic method uses an alogorithm that does something like
predicting where the GPS will be and if it finds it isn't it will
place a trackpoint and start the prediction again. So it uses less
points when you are going at a steady speed in a straightish line but
more if you are continually changing speed and direction. I've used
auto when logging my track when driving and it lasts about five hours
before filling the memory. I'd suggest a suck it and see method to see
if Fill Auto works for your rides; do a middling length ride and see
    how much memory is used.

  7. Paul,
Not sure about your model of GPS, which I think is quite old in
technological terms. With my Garmin, you would have to split the route into
2 sections if you ran out of storage for one route. A pain I know, but it
seems that yours is an old model.
As to the tracks recording; my Venture has the option to start recording at
the start of the day. when I finish I stop recording and when I get home I
download onto MM my tracks. I have the problem that I download an "Active
Log" and a track at the same time. I simply delete the track and use the log
    for all purposes.
I suspect that the major problem is that your GPS is not new enough to allow
you to carry out the functions that are now available to you.

Thanks for the reply. It does seem I will need to split longer routes into
two separate routes. I think my GPS, although getting on a bit, is still
capable of doing what I want it to. It seems it will allow me to follow an
active route planned on MM whilst plotting a track I actually take whilst

what assume was the problem! I have changed the settings and will see how

To record the actual route taken you want to record a track. The

Just a quick update really. Went out with the GPS today, a cycle ride
although it did involve a fair bit of walking (keeping on topic!) for one
reason or another, over the North York Moors. The GPS worked fine and
managed to record my route at the same time as following an 'active' route
which I had planned on the pc / MM etc. Had to split the route in to two
before saving it to the GPS but it worked ok. Settings were Fill/Auto for
the track setup on the GPS so this was obviously the cause of the problem
when it wasn't recording the track before. Thanks everyone for your help.
    Much appreciated.
