I recently replaced my polar heart monitor with a Garmin Forerunner 301. I chose this product mainly because I have added outside running to my workouts.
The Garmin Forerunner states that it calculates calories. I used it for a race several weeks ago and it was great. HOWEVER, when I am inside with the GPS OFF, it doesn't calculate calories. This makes the device worthless to me. 50% of my workouts are inside. Does the calorie expenditure (however accurate/inaccurate as it may be) depend on the GPS being on?

Thanks for any insight!!
One mile walked or ran burns about 100 calories. There's no need for the unit to have to tell you that.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't agree. It depends on a lot of things: weight, heart rate, etc. I do more than just run; I use all different types of stationary cardio machines as well and I do free weights.

You might check your owner's manual to see if it estimates calories burned on distance or hr. It sounds like it might use distance, maybe with some hr modification. So if gps is off, then no calorie estimate.
Or there may be an option you have to turn off/on to get it to use hr rather than distance.
I don't know - just making a suggestion where to look. You might also check http://gpsathletes.com/, if you don't get an answer here and can't find something in the manual or their web page. (I use a Polar 625 outdoors and indoors so not familiar with Garmin 301, but have been a little curious as to how it estimates calories. I think the earlier versions - without the hrm - also calculate calories suggesting that maybe it's gps linked.)
You're out of luck I'm afraid. The F301 does its calorie calculations using the GPS data. So inside no GPS signal no calories.

I have a Forerunner 201 and a Polar S610i. Both have their calorie epxpenditure formulas and both come out to roughly 100 Kcal/mile for my weight. As David mentioned, estimating at 100 calories per minute (regardless of pace) is close enough for most purposes.

er... would that be per mile?
I guess I misquoted David. But aren't his miles pretty close to 1 minute? ;-)
garmin doesn't know your calorie expenditures any more than anyone in this group does. 100 kcal per mile is about as accurate as you are going to get, and that's probably what the forerunner uses. personally, i think it's good mainly for estimating mileage and finding your way back to the start when running in a strange location.
