what bits is your galaxy coming with? mine (01 model) was
IMHO underspecced for the price, and it has cost a lot to
bring it up to spec.

I ordered one in March [1] and was told they weren't making
any until May.

Well, it's May now & it still hasn't arrived. It's being
built, but there's a world-wide shortage of Shimano bits,
apparently.

I was hoping that it's 1st "official" outing would be this
Sunday, on the BHF Dorset 50 miler [2], but no word that
it's got to the LBS yet. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll
arrive at all. Best of luck to you too.

I ordered a Super Galaxy and was promised one in April but
didn't get one, I've now ordered the Galaxy as they promised
one at the end of May. Their customer service isn't the best
in the world but good bikes.

I only had to replce the back wheel on my last one and that
was 15 years and 1000s of miles

perfectly, I went for a 10 mile ride on my temporary Apollo

I was very upset when some scum nicked my old one. It was
worth all of 15 quid second hand.

From the web site but I don't think it's up to date as the
2004 model has the compact frame. I just don't know anything
about bikes anymore. I had gear shifters on the frame and a
biopace crank.

Galaxy page actually says it's aluminium (shurely shome
mishtake! I think they've put the Horizon info there in
error) the "full specifications" say

The bae model galaxy is still 531. The SG and UG are 853
compacts. IMO, they're not real (old school) galaxies. I
know they're technically superior etc but with such a tried
and trust bikeed I hope Dawes will keep at least one of the
galaxy range as the standard 531 full size.

BTW, 531 gals are virtually indestructable. Has anyone out
there had real touring experience with the new models?

I suspect nearly all nicked bikes are worth about 15 quid or
so to the scumbag who takes them whether their replacement
cost is 15 quid or 3000 quid.

As Peter points out, are you looking at the galaxy or the
horizon? Dawes have the galaxy with a steel frame, bar end
shifters, ie a classic tourer.

They told me on the phone that the Galaxy has the 853
compact. Mind you they told me I could have a Super Galaxy
in April as well but didn't send one.

I'm a bit wary of how sturdy the compact frames are
especially with a front and rear load and a trailer

A marketing error IMO. The Galaxy is not meant to be a bike
for fashion victims. It sells on its reputation as a classic
British tourer - a traditional and reliable load carrier
that gives a superb ride but can produce a turn of speed
when urged.

Lugged and brazed, too, which I heard was on the way to
being replaced by TIG on the Galaxy. I much prefer lugged

Should be stiffer, if anything. The only place you look to
lose is support for the seatpost, but as long as the luggage
is on the bike and not on you then no problem. People have
been doing Serious Touring on compact frames since they
existed and no obvious problems seem to have broken through
into "you don't want to do /that/!" territory AFAICT.
