Look at it this way, you were never going to be able to keep the money.
This way you got to use the $1500 for a while before giving it up.

That's about $20-25 a week too little they took out of your paycheck.
Or look at it as a free loan for a year. We usually try to see where we
are in about September or so and adjust our withholding for the rest of
the year if we need.

The first year my business did really well, I ended up owing more on
April 15 than I'd made the entire year before. A pleasant shock but
still quite a surprise.

Add to the above amount that you are obliged to pay as the result of
direct taxation on income, to the indirect taxation on everything we
purchase, including Council Tax on our properties for local services,
and we are paying more today than when the robber Barons used to tax
the peasants back in the Middle Ages.

The problem is, we don't have a modern day Robin Hood!!

However, if you pay high taxes the comforting counter-balance is the
knowledge that you are a high earner!!

I should add to this JH, that I have always been both employed,
whereby my tax is deducted by my employers from my salary, and self
employed, where I am responsible for producing my own accounts and
taxed only on the profit that my business achieves.

I have to be honest and admit that I pay far less tax on my
self-employed activities, than I do on my earned income from
employment.

This is due to my very good accountants and my own expertise in
reducing my liabilities by the use of legitimate business expenses,
which can be as far reaching as the tax office will accept.

It is described as tax avoidance, which is perfectly legal and moral,
as opposed to tax evasion, which is not!!

I know all about the interest implications (as does the IRS as I had a
$4 penalty (BWAHAHAHA) for underpayment of withholding) of not giving
the IRS a bunch of extra money during the year.

If sales increase unexpectedly, it can be difficult to find extra
items of allowable expenditure to offset.

Fortunately for me, as an absentee agricultural entrepreneur, my
income doesn't alter very much from year to year, other than modest
increments in line with inflation.
