  1. Yesterday I had a work activity that involved rockclimbing at Kangaroo
Point. I took my bike so I could ride home. One of my work colleagues
opened up my front brakes. I noticed this before I mounted my bike
because it's part of the standard checks I do in the interest of staying
alive, but I know a lot of people aren't religious about this habit. I'd
urge you all to be vigilant, especially when parking in a public place,
and encourage your friends to do the same.

It might just be me, but I think that's fscking inexcusable and
unforgivable. Back break - yeah, might be funny, I try to cut some speed
and it doesn't really work, okay haha yeah I didn't check my brake oops.
Front brake - that's my stopping power. Some w@nker in a Prado cuts me
off, and I need to brake in a hurry. Congratulations colleague, you've
    just murdered me.

    What... he/she did this as a joke? or they're just a c&*t?

    Pretty poor effort.

For the record, though, while I don't check my brakes before hopping on
the bike, I'm sure I'd notice before reaching a speed that would be
problematic if I did turn out to be brakeless. So let's not get carried
away with the "murdered" scenario ;-)

If you know who did it, make sure you get HR/OHS/Police involved (depends how much of a [censored] the person is) and make an example of them.

    OR:

"Ha ha, how funny, I just cut your brake cable on your car and removed the brake pads, then smashed your headlights and taillights for a practical joke...."

  5. A colleague tells the story that at his old job, some of his mates
tightened his pedals so that he couldn't clip out.... luckily he ended
up only stacking at the security gate where he had to swipe out...

That's definitely not on my list of checks before a commute (but then
again, I have EBs on my commuter so it's not really an issue)

Discreetly dust their work station in fine chilli powder. Or create a lovely homemade cake of soap, beautifully perfumed with roses or patchouli, and gently infused with birdseye chillis.

I really hope it was just a joke. But when I find out who did it, I'm
letting their car tyres down. (No, I won't cut their brake cables).

For the record, the start of my ride, in 3 of the 4 locations I commonly
ride from, is down a big fsck off hill, right from the start. By the
time I've travelled 50m from my start point, I've hit at least 50km/h.
So yeah, I could pretty easily be dead.

Fsckwit!! Report it to your OH&S rep at the least.

If you find out who did it, run over them on your bike, aiming as carefully as possible to hit them in the groin with your front wheel. Then apologise "Sorry, my front brake didn't seem to work".

Good to hear you didn't become road pizza.

(I used to instruct on the Kangaroo Pt cliffs. After an abseiling class one day, I did a couple of climbs just to relax after teaching the newbies. After setting up the top rope and carefully instructing one girl how to belay me from the bottom I did 3 climbs. On the last one, I almost got to the top and I was buggered so I asked her to lower me off. Stupid fscking woman, she just released the belay device and stood there watching while I dropped 7 or 8 metres to the ground, going backwards, trying to push off the outcroppy bits as I went, yelling the rockclimbers' freefall cry of "Faaaa....aaaaark". I landed heavily on my [censored] and when I asked her what she thought she was doing (or words to that effect), she said she thought I was abseiling and didn't need a safety rope, ie her. She is a doctor now, probably still in Qld, aaaaah!)

🙁 Report it. Not sure how much good it would do though. You'd have
better luck if you were a driver and someone had cut your brake lines.
That's equivalent to what happened to you, the difference is that
there'd be a police investigation on behalf of the cager.

Regarding testing brakes, when learning to fly, first item on the
checklist after commencing to taxi was to test the brakes. I do
this on my bike too. It's saved me at least once when I forgot to
close them after fixing a flat.

Strongly recommend lodging an official complaint first, or attempting to
    if the superiors are fsckwits.

Only then should you let their tyres down, preferrably with side cutters
in a public place, where it could have been any [censored].

Between now and then, just smile sweatly at them all. Makes them wonder.

The other alternative of course was just to visit the quack and get a
sick note for as long as you can, but if your work activity involves
rock climbing it would be tough.

Sure hope you never have to rely on these [censored] in any climb.

  12. Just kill them all 🙂

I would *never* climb with a person who would do that sort of thing.

    "On belay"

    Yeah sure.

Well in that case, you'd better hope you never snap a front brake cable.

It certainly can happen, and usually at the worst possible time - when
you're braking _hard_ in an emergency.

IMO this is a far more likely scenario than you failing to notice that
someone has monkeyed with your bike.

Or stick some hydraulics on your roadie... fully bling ;-)

Of course: that's when you're putting the most strain on the cable, and
it's most likely to shrug its shoulders and give up.

Still fairly unlikely, assuming you've maintained your bike properly, to
    be fair, though.

Incidentally, are you planning on rocking up for Goatage sometime? Been
quite a few years since we've caught up in person (I won't be there this
week; clashes with other things, alas.)

Extremely [censored] behaviour. Squeezing both brakes before
    rolling off is my habit.

I've always thought that this aspect of V-brake
design is a bit [censored] (I'm assuming V-brakes here?).
To get an MTB wheel off, you need to open the brakes
which renders them non-functioning. Compare this with
road bike (especially campy) where you just click a button
on the levers that opens the brakes. They still work but
the lever is a bit further from the handle bars. Should
be possible to do something similar with all brakes I reckon.

Well over the years I've snapped a brake cable, 2 gear cables, and (on a
motorcycle) 2 clutch cables. Maybe I just ride in the rain more often
    than some people ;-)

It's generally when water gets trapped in there and they rust through
    that they fail.

I have been planning to... particularly given that it's walking distance

or just have disc brakes where you don't need open anything. 🙂

ONly time I've done that is when I've been lazy about the maintenance.

Usually I can feel clutch cables starting to go, the lever feels
    different.

I have not yet broken a cable on one of the drum braked bikes, but I'm
usually pretty paranoid about them. Lotsa lube on the nipples and
    lots of checking.
