  2. Even if one thinks the analysis simplistic, this story
    is getting wide publicity and will produce benefits I
    think; refined carbs in general are getting the bad rap
    they deserve.

  5. This is absolutely ridiculous... Listen, HFCS probably
    isn't the best thing in the world, but it doesn't make
    people obese... People make themselves obese when they
    hoarde the stuff and pump themselves full of it. It is okay
    if eaten in moderation, it will not make you fat on
    occasion. Eating and drinking high levels of this stuff,
    that is what makes you fat.

    2) Massively increased appetite
    3) Promoted fat storage and decreased metabolism
    4) Was fully digested in less than 30 minutes

    compared to a food which :

    5) Had an extreme satiation effect
    6) Massively dereased appetite
    7) Increased metabolism
    8) Was fully digested in more than eight hours

    It should be obvious that there is a significant in those
    two foods in regards to tendancy for weight gain. Fructose
    is of the first type.

    I don't know how similar HFCS is to cane/beet sugar but I do
    know that if you eat too much of one thing you are going to
    gain weight. Also, its probably not a bad idea to have a
    diet soda once in a while instead of a regular one.

    Ayup. HFCS in American Coke is the same as sugar in
    Australian Coke. We are just as fat as Americans. Look,
    fatfux eat too much and don't get off their ass enough. Stop

    Fructose is quite slowly absorbed into the bloodstream. This
    is why it has such a low Glycemic Index.

    It has the same calories as many other foods and will only
    put on weight if excess is eaten wrt calorie allocation.

    Apples and pears have a high proportion of fructose. The
    juice is considerably higher than in HFCS sweetened Coke.
    Go figure.

    only goes into the blood when the blood needs it. The rest
    of it remains as fat.

    To clearify I would not want to argue that you can simply
    claim "fructose made me fat" with a complete lack of
    responsibility. While I do think manufacturers need to
    address that sugar can act as addictive drug, common sense
    would tell you that you have a problem long before you are
    100 lbs overweight. Also, eating an apple in the morning
    isn't going to give you fructose-related obesity, most
    natural sources of fructose even the dense ones like sweet
    fruit, are no where near as dense compared to the
    artificially sweetened ones.

    The problem with artificaly fructose laden foods is that
    they they typically have no inherent satiety responce (low
    fat and low bulk volume), they can be eaten *very* quickly,
    and encourage appetite. Try eating something very sweet and
    see how much of it you can eat until you physically feel
    full, considering that it takes about 20 minutes for your
    brain to realize this has happened, the problem is obvious
    with highly refined sugared foods. Which is why diabetis and
    related disorders are increasing steadily, with more than
    2000+ cases being diagnosed every day in the US alone.

    Yes of course the amount of raw calories is an influences,
    but you will see significant differences in fat and lean
    muscle gains on isocaloric diets, plus differences in mood,
    mental ability, etc. .

    Potatoe provides most satiety of common foods. This has a
    higher GI than HFCS. Bulk (stomach distension) and blood
    glucose normalisation are the most important satiety
    monitors of the body.

    I definitely don't think that HFCS and sodas are to blame-
    it's about moderation and if you're consistently having
    sodas in excess than of course it's not the smae as watching
    your portions and monitoring what you eat.

    Actually, most of the time, however, unless your body needs
    to immediately increase it's blood-sugar level, the liver
    changes fructose into glycogen first. We have already

    Now that we have outlined how our bodies use glucose, we
    will discuss why fruit (fructose or fruit sugar) is
    detrimental in an attempt to maximize fat loss. Since
    muscles have the specific purpose of contraction, they have
    a limited number of enzymes for glycogen synthesis. Muscle
    only has the necessary enzymes to convert glucose (and
    nothing else) into glycogen. The liver, however, is able to
    make glycogen from fructose, lactate, glycerol, alanine, and
    other three-carbon metabolites. Muscle glycogen, which is
    similar in structure to starch, is an amylopectin (branched
    chained polymer containing hundreds of glucose units).
    Unlike muscles, which can only supply energy to themselves
    through the stored 250-400 grams of glycogen, the liver is
    responsible for supplying energy to the entire body.

    If you have fruit, fruit juice, or any of its derivatives,
    the following conditions occur:

    Referring to the three ways the body uses glucose, assuming
    that blood glucose levels are adequate, the glucose will
    then be stored as glycogen. Muscle does not have the
    necessary enzymes to synthesize fructose into glycogen;
    therefore the liver converts this fructose into liver
    glycogen. It would only take three, 8-ounce glasses of
    orange juice to fully replenish liver glycogen stores. Since
    the liver is responsible for supplying energy to the entire
    body, once its stores are full, a rate limiting enzyme in
    glucose metabolism which is responsible for signaling the
    body to store glucose as glycogen or convert it to fat
    (phosphofructokinase), signals the body that all stores are
    full. If the glycogen stores are signaled as full, then the
    third way our body uses excess glucose is to convert it to
    fatty acids and store as adipose tissue. In essence, fruit
    sugar is easily converted to fat.

    Many may be asking why then is fruit low on the glycemic
    index? If it does not cause a sudden release of insulin,
    then how could it ever be a poor food choice? Once the
    fructose (fruit sugar) enters the liver and liver glycogen
    is already full, then it can not be used by the muscles for
    glycogen or energy production. It is converted to fat and
    released back into the bloodstream to be stored as adipose
    tissue. The low glycemic response is based on the fact that
    fructose leaves the liver as fat, and fat does not raise
    insulin levels.

    This is the biochemistry behind the recommendations to limit
    fruit in your diet. As mentioned, fruit is a very nutritious
    food full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and low in calories
    and fat. If your goal is to exclusively to minimize bodyfat,
    then it is advisable that you consume more complex
    carbohydrates, which will go to replenishing muscle glycogen
    stores rather than fruit, which will only replenish liver
    glycogen stores, and is useless in muscle glycogen
    replenishment.

    Very nice, but if you are eating eucalorically, it's
    academic. Of course all sorts of problems occur when you eat
    too much energy. Various fats an other nutrients become
    problematic. The beauty of fructose is its slow absorption
    into the blood and hence its ability to be used for energy
    in the longer term than glucose. Glucose for fright and
    flight, and fructose for trekking back to the cave over the
    next several hours.
